Looking to change jobs or to make some extra side cash? Shipt is a company that hires you to become a personal grocery shopper for locals in your area. They’re mostly located on the east coast, but rapidly expanding to other parts of the country.
What Is Shipt?
Shipt is a free mobile app for both iOS and Android devices that allows you to do your grocery shopping from anywhere. Instead of taking the time to go to the store, find your food, and drive back to your home, you can have someone do it for you instead.
When you look on their app, you’ll notice that each product is neatly organized into categories and comes with a pre-determined price. This means that you won’t be able to choose which store your shopper goes to, but only the products that are there.
Shipt also arranges food into certain meal plans such as ingredients for paleo eaters or “Feel Better Quick” snacks. They’re even arranged into categories so that you can make a meal based on one of their recipes.
For those looking to deliver food to customers, you can become a trained employee and make $15 – $25 per hour. It doesn’t matter what type of transportation you have as long as it’s reliable, and you can set your own hours.
Personal Review As An Independent Shopper
Shipt is a great way to make some extra cash, but is it worth the extra effort? Here’s my personal breakdown of how it looks from being a trained grocery shopper.
You have to be incredibly quick. As soon as an order is placed, you have to be able to buy all of the groceries and deliver them as soon as possible. While it’s not required, the expectation is that they will be delivered in about an hour. This can be a little bit stressful and frustrating. Just hope that the purchaser doesn’t have a huge list.
You’re not going to have any trouble finding work. A recent article in a Tampa Bay newspaper talks about how there aren’t enough Shipt employees to keep up with demand. No matter what hours you’re working, you’re more than likely going to find work.
This is one of the best perks of Shipt. As a trained grocery shopper, you get to choose your own hours and your own schedule. You can work as little as 1 day a week or for just a few hours every day.
At a minimum of $15 dollars an hour, you’re already making more than minimum wage with no prior experience necessary. The only requirements are that you have reliable transportation, pass their training and continue to deliver groceries on time with great customer service.
Depending on where you live, you might not be able to find a gig since Shipt is currently only available to states located on the east coast. But be sure to check back often since their demand is increasing rapidly and they’re rapidly expanding to other areas.
Personal Review On The Buyer’s Side
Overall, Shipt is a great app to use, and makes it extremely convenient for those with a busy schedule. What I really like is that you get a $10 bonus toward your first purchase upon registration. Here’s my personal take as a buyer:
I was surprised at the wide range of choices that you have when adding items to your shopping list. You can literally find anything, from baby products and cereal to frozen foods and pet products. If you have a specific list, you shouldn’t have to worry about
Prices are a bit high, but not unreasonable. For example, you can buy 1 banana for 39 cents, and right now I can go to my local Trader Joe’s and get one for just 19 cents. While it’s not a huge difference, it still adds up. However, I do realize that I don’t have to spend any time shopping or spend any money on transportation. If you’re buying just a few things it’s very reasonable.
I wish I had this app in my area back when I was a student at the University of Washington. It took quite a bit of time to walk to the grocery store from where I was living, so I ended up just shopping at the local convenience store in our dorm. Prices were incredibly outrageous. Half of the time I sacrificed some extra cash for convenience. With Shipt, I could have just paid a little bit extra and would’ve gotten exceptional convenience.
As a buyer you have the option of signing-up for a subscription service. For $14/month, you get free deliveries on all orders over $35 with same-day delivery. This part I don’t personally enjoy since we’re already paying for overpriced groceries.
Right now Shipt is only available in certain states. Yet the demand is growing extremely rapidly, so don’t be surprised if you find it in your area soon. It’s great for busy professionals!
