We’ve compiled a list of the top 40 different Amazon hacks and tricks to save money with this retail giant.
See one that’s not on the list?
Feel free to let us know in the comments down below.
1. Get Free Products With Amazon Review Sites
If you want to get Amazon products for free or at an extreme discount, Amazon Review Sites can help you do just that.
These sites serve as a middleman between buyers and sellers on Amazon.
Promise to leave a review after you receive and test a product, and you can get it for free or really cheap.
Out of all of the review sites, they tend to have the most products, and you can snag multiple products at one time.
Other review sites may require approval from the seller first, and often there’s a limit to only one or two products at a time.
We’re going to use ProductTesting.co as an example and tell you a quick summary of the steps you need to take:
- Sign-up for a new account at VIPON by clicking here.
- Choose the product that you want to purchase. You’ll be shown the discounted price along with how much you’re saving. I received this cool Nessie Ladle at 90% off and this Owl Egg Mold for free.
- Wait for the product. Once it arrives at your door and you get a chance to test it, leave your honest review.
- Verify your review by pasting in your review permalink. You can find a list of all of your Amazon reviews here.
These services are completely free, and you can take full advantage by using more than one at a time. Here’s a list of the top 10 Review Sites.
2. Instantly Get 5% Off With The Amazon Prime Store Card
If you want to save on Amazon and you want to do it instantly, one of the quickest and easiest ways is with the Amazon Store Card.
This credit card gives you the option of getting 5% off of your Amazon purchase, or you can choose to get special interest-free financing on purchases of $149 or more.
The card comes with no annual fee and statement credit is applied automatically.
You must be an Amazon Prime member in order to qualify for the 5% cash back offer. A one-year membership costs $99, but you can try it out with their free 30-day trial. Of course, the Amazon Store Card comes with high interest fees, so make sure to pay it off right away.
3. Get A Discounted Amazon Gift Card
Instead of using a credit card to make your next Amazon purchase, you might as well buy a discounted gift card instead. GiftMe and Raise are two gift card vendors that sell Amazon gift cards at up to 5% off their retail value. Type in the gift card code at checkout and your savings is immediately applied.
I personally recommend GiftMe over Raise, mostly because they tend to have more cards in stock, I can quickly make purchases from my phone and I receive my gift card within seconds. With Raise, it can take up to 24 hours to receive a gift card in your inbox. Use can even use the Discover It Card to save an additional 2% on your gift card purchase, netting you a total of 7% savings on your purchase.
4. Turn Unwanted Gift Cards Into Amazon Cash
Do you ever get those Visa or MasterCard gift cards around holiday or for your birthday? One of the most annoying things is getting rid of those last few dollars. If you have a minimum of $.50 cents still remaining on the card, you can convert it into Amazon gift cards. Here’s what you need to do:
- Find out the exact balance of the card. This can usually be done by calling up the number on the back of the card or using their website.
- Buy an Amazon gift card here and type in the remaining amount Visa card.
- Send the card to own email.
- Redeem the gift card by typing in the code on their apply gift card page.
5. Invite Friends To Use The Amazon App
When you invite your friends to use the Amazon Shopping App, you get $5 in Amazon credit after they make their first purchase. Not only that, but your friends also get $5 coupon toward any purchase by using your referral link.
You can find your referral link by opening the app and clicking on “Your Account” under the menu. Scroll down a ways until you see “Invite Friends.” Invite your friends using either your share code or send them a direct text message from your phone.
6. Buy Through An Online Shopping Portal
Online shopping portals are websites that earn a commission when you click on one of their links to shop at a retailer. Instead of keeping this cash for themselves, they give most of, if not all of the commission back to you in the form of cash back.
These portals are all 100% free. By using their links, you can get an average of 6% to 10% in cash back when shopping on Amazon. The only downside is that this applies to certain categories (jewelry, clothing, etc.), and not all Amazon purchases.
For shopping on Amazon, we highly recommend using TopCashBack. They have some of the highest cash back rates around and they even give a $10 sign-up bonus. Once you reach a minimum of $10 in earned cash back you can redeem this cash to PayPal. Or even better yet, redeem for Amazon gift cards and get an additional 3% in cash back. Check out our list of top 10 shopping portals to compare rates.
7. Subscribe To Orders With Subscribe & Save
If you’re purchasing common, household items on a frequent basis, sign-up for Amazon’s Subscribe & Save to get up to 15% off of your purchase. When shopping, see if an item has the option to subscribe for a 5% discount. This usually applies to essentials such as food and toilet paper.
Subscribe to 5 or more of these items and your 5% is automatically bumped to 15%. Keep in mind that when you put a product under subscription, you’re agreeing to order this item on a consistent basis, anywhere from once every 1-6 months. However, you can cancel at any time in your Subscribe & Save settings page.
8. Get Free Android Apps With Amazon Underground
If you’re paying for Android Apps, Amazon will give them to you for free. The first year of launching their Underground Service the amount of free mobile apps has more than tripled on Amazon. Developers in turn benefit by spreading the word about their app through an incredibly popular online platform.
These apps are available to all Android and Amazon Fire users located within the US, UK, Germany or France. And don’t think that just because they’re free the quality is poor. They have over $20,000 worth of apps in a wide range of categories – education, games, comics and more.
9. Get 10% In Cash Back With Discover
If you have a Discover It Credit Card, you have access to one of the best shopping portals around. This card gives you a minimum of 1% in cash back and 5% in cash back on categories that change quarterly. For the 2016 calendar year, you get 5% cash back at Amazon from the months of July all the way to December.
For new cardholders, Discover is doubling all of your cash back for the first year. This means that now you’re getting 10% back at Amazon instead of just 5%. Unfortunately, there’s a cap at $1,500 per quarter ($3,000 for 2 quarters in 2016).
Not going to reach the cap and don’t want the savings to end? Buy gift cards before the year ends so that you can get the discount all year round. Applying for the card is free and there’s no annual fee.
10. Look For Better Discounts On Amazon Warehouse
Before you buy a product on Amazon that’s new, consider if you’d be satisfied with buying it used or refurbished on the Amazon Warehouse Page. All used products are checked and tested with Amazon, and all refurbished products are tested multiple times to ensure they function properly. You can often find items at 50% or more off their brand new price.
11. Buy Clearance Items On Amazon Outlet
Amazon Outlet sells pre-owned products, items that are either out of season, overstocked items or those that have been discontinued. It’s not uncommon to find deals of up to 80% off. Watches for example are currently going for 50% – 80% off.
12. Check Third-Party Sellers For Discounts
The price you see when you view a product isn’t necessarily the price you have to pay. Lots of third-party sellers are often providing the same product at a much cheaper price.
You can view seller reviews to see if they’ve had great experiences with buyers, but most of the time they ship items through Amazon Prime, meaning you’re dealing directly with Amazon. If they sellers aren’t going through Prime shipping, you can always go through Amazon for help.
13. Use Paribus To Check Price Drops
Note: As of recently this only applies to TVs that are shipped and sold by Amazon.
Don’t you hate it when you buy something only to find out later on that a week later it was selling for a much cheaper price? Stores often guarantee price protection in case this happens, but it’s a hassle to keep track of it. Paribus is a free service that helps you get your spent money back when prices drop.
Amazon states that if you buy a product and its price drops within 30 days, you’re guaranteed the difference. Paribus will help you keep track of this automatically so you don’t have to go back and look. While registering and using the service is free, they do take a small commission of the money they help you get back. However, this is much better than not receiving any money at all. Refer enough friends to lower their cut down to nothing.
14. Choose No-Rush Shipping At Checkout
If you’re willing to be patient with your Amazon order, you can select no-rush shipping to get $5.99 in Prime Pantry credit. Prime Pantry is a service that helps you get low prices on everyday items without having to buy in bulk. This includes food, baby care, pet items and anything else you might use on a daily basis.
Since their products are so cheap, normally they charge a $5.99 shipping fee regardless of whether you have Prime or not. Choosing no-rush shipping will get you this for free. Occasionally Amazon makes a switch and gives away $1 credit toward Instant Video instead.
15. Look Under Their Coupon Section
Every once in a while coupons become available for certain products. On the Amazon coupon page there’s a wide selection of available coupons, mostly on products you can find under Prime Pantry.
All you have to do is click the “Clip Coupon” button and your discount will automatically be applied at checkout. Coupons either give a certain amount or a percentage off. Never miss a deal by signing-up to get deals directly to your inbox.
16. Get An Add-On Item Without Having To Spend $25
If you’re not too particular about which brand you receive, you can choose to go with an add-on item instead. These items are usually much cheaper than other products that fall under the same category.
The only requirement is that your cart must total a minimum of $25, but there is a workaround to this. You can pre-order media that hasn’t been released yet (such as this book) and add it to your cart. Reach the $25 minimum and place your order. Once the add-on item gets shipped, go ahead and cancel the pre-ordered item to get your remaining money back and without any penalties.
17. Tell Amazon That Your Shipment Is Late
I’m always excited when my Amazon shipment is late. This is because Amazon has such great customer service, that if you’re unsatisfied with something that’s their fault, they’re going to reimburse you for it.
I can’t recall the countless times in which I’ve gotten a free month of Amazon Prime just because my order was a couple of days late. If you don’t want an extension of your Prime membership, tell the rep you want something else instead. They might be able to apply a credit to your account in order to make up for it.
18. Amazon Family Can Get You Huge Savings On Diapers
Originally named Amazon Mom, Amazon Family gives you exclusive family-oriented discounts. This consists of up to 20% savings on certain diaper brands and a 25% completion discount on your Baby Registry. This service gives you 90-day returns as well as a lot of other benefits.
Don’t forget to stack this discount with coupons, Subscribe & Save as well as buying a discounted gift card. With all of these combined, we calculated that you could save a total of 55% on diapers from Amazon given that you buy a particular brand.
19. Don’t Forget About Prime Unlimited Storage
If you have a ton of photos that you want to store, there’s no need to pay for space. As an Amazon Prime member, you get unlimited photo storage and 5 GB of storage for videos and other files. All this is done by using their Cloud Drive service.
In case you need to upgrade, you can always change your plan and get a free three-month free trial for extra storage. This media can be accessed using your iOS or Android device, making it perfect for quick and easy sharing with others.
20. Be Kind And Share Your Prime Membership
It used to be that you could share your Amazon Prime membership with up to 4 others as long as you knew their birthday and email account. Unfortunately their rules have changed a bit, but you can still save some cash by being able to share Prime with one other household member.
The person you share it with will have access to all of the benefits of Prime, such as free two-day shipping, Prime movies and access to the Kindle Library. In addition, you can add up to 4 children on your account. They won’t have their private account or be able to buy anything, but they’ll still be granted access to video streaming and other benefits.
Keep in mind that when you share Amazon Prime with another adult member, they will have access to your credit card information and your stored addresses. This is why we suggest only sharing it with those for which the service was intended for – your family.
21. College Students Get 6-Month Free-Trial Of Prime
If you’re a broke college student but still want access to Amazon Prime, you’re in luck. As long as you’re in school, you get a 6-month free-trial of Prime. You need to have an edu email address as well as an expected date of graduation to qualify. Amazon will send you a verification email, so make sure it’s an address that you will be able to access.
If six months have already passed but you still want to try out Amazon Prime, you can get a 50% discount. As long as you’re still a student, pay $49 instead of the $99 annual fee. If you don’t have an edu address Amazon also offers other ways to submit proof of student status.
22. Buy Gift Cards On Reddit For 20% Off
You can go to Reddit’s gift card exchange page and trade gift cards or buy gift cards from others at an extreme discount. The current going rate for Amazon gift cards is 20% off, but there are some things you should be aware of.
You never want to trade with someone who doesn’t already have a positive reputation. Furthermore, you never want to trade with a new account – you never know if they created it just to scam you. While it seems daunting, if you follow the guidelines listed on their sidebar, you should have a positive and pleasant experience. In order to make things less complicated, we’ve created a Reddit Gift Card Exchange Guide.
23. Get One Free Book From The Kindle Lending Library Each Month
If you’re an Amazon Prime member, you can choose one featured book every month for free from the Kindle Lending Library. You can pay a $10/month subscription specifically for the Kindle service, but we just recommend going with an annual membership Prime since it’s slightly cheaper.
For those of you who are really into reading, the Kindle First program is an advanced reading program. Prime members have the option of downloading one of six different featured books for free, even before its released.
24. Stay Tuned For Amazon Prime Day
Every July there’s an event called Prime Day that’s meant to be Amazon’s Black Friday. There are deals on a wide range of products. Even though many have claimed that their discounts aren’t as great as the hype leading up to it, you will still most likely find better deals on products that you’ve been eyeing.
For example, an on Prime Day of 2015 an Alexa Echo was going for $129 instead of its original price of $179 – that’s a 28% discount. A while back we wrote about a trick to see deals early by visiting this page a day before the big event. Keep in mind that it’s only once a year, so depending on the season it may or may not be worth the wait.
25. Prime Early Access Gives You Deals 30 Minutes Early
If you’re an Amazon Prime member, you have the advantage of Prime Early Access. Get access to lightning deals 30 minutes before all other members. So you don’t have to constantly keep checking back on the page, sign-up for the email list to get lightning deals in your inbox right when they’re available.
26. Avoid The Sales Tax Through Third-Party Sellers
Before calculating your cart total, don’t forget about the dreaded sales tax. Depending on the state that you’re located in, each item that you order through Amazon may have a sales tax tacked on to the final price. One way to avoid this is by going through third-party sellers.
You won’t get free two-day shipping since these products aren’t fulfilled and shipped by Amazon. However, if your product is expensive enough, it could save you a lot of cash. Be warned that third-party sellers may also have a shipping price tacked on to the total.
27. Smile With Amazon Smile
While it won’t necessarily save you any extra money, it can definitely change someone’s life. The Amazon Smile Program is an automatic way for you to donate to charity without any extra work or money on your part.
Whichever charity you choose, Amazon will donate one-half of a percent of your total price to that charity on every order. There’s absolutely no cost to sign-up, and you can quickly change your charity on the navigation bar. Think of this as a way to give back without having to spend any money. And no, you can’t use this as a tax write-off.
28. Choose A Less Popular Color
Sometimes the color you choose is the most expensive one. This Nessie Ladle has 3 different options that you can choose from – blue, green or purple. As it turns out, the green one is $1 more than the other two.
If you’re not too particular about which color you get, you could end up saving a couple of dollars here and there. You may need to click on the actual color to view the price difference.
29. Add Items To Your Cart, But Don’t Check Out
Although it doesn’t always happen, sometimes Amazon will send you a reminder email about items left in your cart. Not only that, but every once in a while there will be a discount code that will give you a certain percentage off of your item. If the only thing holding you back is the price, leave it in the cart for a few days and see if you get one of those reminder emails.
30. Listen To Millions Of Free Music Tracks
With Prime Music, you have access to millions of different songs at absolutely no cost if you’re a Prime member. While it’s not the best selection, it’s free with your membership and you can often find songs to popular artists.
31. Use Tracktor To Keep Track Of Price Drops
If you’re willing to wait to make a purchase on a particular item, Tracktor is an automatic price tracker that checks when prices are changed on Amazon. Type in a product name, URL or ASIN to view a particular item.
Tracktor will tell you when your prices have dropped, by how much and also give you previous price drops. If you notice that the price changes frequently, this can be a great tool for predicting whether the price will drop again in the near future.
32. Use CamelCamelCamel To Automatically Track Price Drops
Although Tracktor is a great tool for seeing if a price has dropped, we don’t want to be constantly looking up an item. CamelCamelCamel is a website that sends you alerts when the price of an item drops.
33. Buy Amazon Coins To Save On In-App Purchases
You can buy 500 Amazon Coins for $4.65 that can used to save you up to 25% on apps, games and in-app purchases. These can be used on any Android, Kindle or Fire device.
Coins can also be given to your friends and family as a gift, and in the long-run it’s going to be much cheaper than using cash for app purchases. Keep in mind that it’s only worth it if you frequently buy apps, otherwise it might be a waste of your money.
34. Go Through AliExpress To Get The Same Product At A Much Cheaper Price
A lot of the products you see on Amazon are sold by third-party sellers that buy in bulk and resell on Amazon. Normally what happens is that they ship them from China and then mark up the price significantly.
AliExpress is a website that ships a wide range of products from China, and you can often find a much better discount on the exact same item. For example, we can get this Crystal Skull Head Shot Glass for $11 on Amazon, or you could go with AliExpress and get it for under $4.
The only downside is that you’re going to have to wait a few weeks for your item since it’s shipping from China. Be sure to check reviews and seller ratings on the page to make sure you’re getting a quality product.
35. Get Cash For Your Used Products
The Amazon Trade-In Program helps you get paid for your used items. Find an item that you’re interested in trading in and report its condition. The better the condition, the more money you’ll be offered. Any proceeds that you receive will be in the form of Amazon Gift Cards, usually within a week after it arrives.. The shipping costs? It’s completely on Amazon.
36. Price Matching On TVs
Amazon has a TV Low Price Guarantee that applies to televisions shipped and sold by Amazon. If you find a television set at a cheaper price at a competitor, contact them and they’ll refund you the difference in the form of an Amazon Gift Card. You can do this before you make the purchase, or within 30 days of having made your purchase.
37. Don’t Hesitate To Complain About Defects
If you find that an item you receive is slightly scratched or defective in any way, contact Amazon. Depending on the rep that you talk to, they’ll be more than happy to give you a full refund and send you a new product.
Sometimes what happens is that Amazon will send you a completely new item while allowing you to keep the old one. Other times you won’t get a new product, but you don’t have to ship back the old one and you’ll get a full refund. And finally, sometimes you’ll have to ship the old one back in exchange for a new one. It’s all in the luck of the draw, but you won’t know until you try.
38. Check For Fake Reviews
With the rise of Amazon Review Sites that we mentioned at #1, the reviews that sellers leave are often less than great. Although these sites require you to be honest, sometimes buyers leave a review just so they can snag another item at a cheap or discounted price.
You can use FakeSpot to help you check for fake Amazon reviews. There’s already been over half a million products analyzed by their search engine. Paste in any Amazon product link and you’ll receive a free grade and analysis of all user reviews. It may take a while for newer items, since FakeSpot has to individually go through each review.
39. Enjoy Tons Of Great Shows With Instant Video
Amazon Instant Video is available for free to all Prime members. Get access to thousands of different movies and TV shows. Newer series and movies might not be available, but if it’s older it will most likely be available. These videos can be streamed on your computer or to any mobile device.
40. Try To Get A Better Price Outside Of Amazon
Want to see if the product your looking at has the best price on the web, but don’t want to scour all over the web? Use the PriceJump tool. Paste in any Amazon URL and it will automatically check the web against thousands of retailers to see if there’s a better price.
Keep in mind that this may not account for shipping prices, sales tax, coupons, Subscribe & Save, discounted gift cards and more. Plus you might not be able to get free 2-day shipping. It’s important to compare all of these factors when comparing against different retailers.
If you know of some Amazon hacks that you don’t see on a list, we’d love to hear about it. Let us know in the comments below, or if you have any questions. Thanks for reading and happy frugaling!
