How to Make Apple Cider Vinegar
Since we’ve covered all of the uses of apple cider vinegar, you may want to know how to make it yourself.
This is the best way to know where your apple cider vinegar is coming from, although it is not suggested that you use this method for direct ingestion purposes.
It’s a good idea to test the pH levels of your homemade apple cider vinegar as it will need to be at a minimum level of 6% acidity for it to be an effective cleaning agent.
You can get pH level test strips online or at your local home brew store.
To get started on making your own apple cider vinegar, you’ll need:
- A clean jar of any size (quart jars are ideal)
- Fermentation weight or small glass jar
- Cheesecloth or coffee filter
The ingredients that you’ll need will be:
- Organic apple scraps
- 2 tablespoons organic cane sugar
- 2 cups filtered water
The instructions are as follows:
For this recipe you’ll need organic apple scraps that fill your jar at least 3/4 of the way to the top.
You’ll want these scraps to be free of spoilage, mold, or any signs of decomposition
To start, you’ll need to thoroughly clean your jar very well and let air dry.
Fill it with the organic apple scraps ¾ full.
You can use whole apples but remove the core, seeds, stem and chop it up into smaller pieces.
Next, dissolve the cane sugar into the cup of water.
Pour the sugar water over the apples until they are completely submerged.
Weigh down the apples with a fermentation weight or with a small glass jar.
Exposed apple parts will mold and render your vinegar unusable.
Cover your apple mixture with a cheese cloth or coffee filter and secure it with the rubber band.
Put the jar in a dark spot inside your kitchen cabinets.
Let this ferment for 3 weeks.
Check it a few times a week to make sure the apples stay submerged and there is no mold growing.
After 3 weeks, strain the apple pieces out of the liquid and return the liquid to the jar.
Return the jar to the dark spot in the cabinet for 3 or 4 more weeks.
Occasionally stir the jar throughout the remaining weeks of fermentation.
Use the pH strips to see how well your apple cider vinegar is doing.
Once it’s reached the desired acidity levels and tartness, it is ready to use.
