We’ve all heard of No Shave November, but what about No Spend November? Arianna O’Dell is going on a 30-day no spending streak in one of the most expensive cities in the world, New York. Fortunately, we were lucky enough to ask her a few questions about how’s she’s going to survive this month.
Please briefly describe what No Spend November is about.
No-Spend November is a month where I have committed to spending $0 of my own money throughout the month.
Why Are You Doing This?
To Combat Materialism
Since moving to New York I’ve spent an exorbitant amount of money on everything from takeout to entertainment. Today, this stops. During the month of November, I will not buy a single material item using my own dollars.
Why did you decide to do this?
To Push The Limit
I can’t resist a challenge. The idea sounded impossible. That is why I have decided to do it.
To Teach Frugality
I love a good deal. This extreme experiment will help me create a resource for others to learn easy money saving tips.
What are some of your current ways of getting freebies and food?
From Seamless promo codes, to free networking events, it’s hard to go hungry in NYC.
Signing up for bonus programs and birthday rewards can put extra cash back into your hands in no time. Dinner at Benihannas anyone?
What about rent? In New York, renting an apartment can easily reach up to $1,500 a month.
I don’t think my roommates would be very happy if I got evicted. For this reason, I’ll still be paying my rent but also trying to make the amount through non-traditional mediums.
Do you plan on using any government benefits such as food stamps or unemployment?
No, there are too many people who really need this help. I’d rather use my resourcefulness to get me through the month.
Have you spent a single penny yet?
Not yet. But it’s only day 4…
Will you continue doing this after November?
Who knows? I may indulge in Decadent December, but still want to be committed to living a more frugal lifestyle.
Are you crazy?
I prefer the term creative, but my mother would beg to differ.
