Diana Star Dec 7, 2017
Want to Earn Some Extra Money?

Looking for new and different ways to earn some cash?

We’ve put together this list of 10+ creative ways to make money.

Most of the items on this list don’t require a large amount of effort and tend to be different than your everyday tasks.

Here’s a quick list of some of the items we’ve put together on this list:

  • Take pictures of your receipts
  • Teach English online
  • Start a blog
  • Get paid to walk in stores
  • Renting out your friendship
  • More…

See one that’s not on the list and should be? Let us know in the comments below.

With that said, let’s get started.

1. Start A Blog

You’d be surprised about how starting a blog can change your financial situation.

Not only do you get to write about something that your passionate about, but you can earn some cash for doing so.

Don’t expect to make lots of money immediately.

I’ve been running this blog for almost 4 years now, and it took me the first 2 years to get it to where I could earn a full-time income.

However, even if you don’t get a large following, you can still earn a decent side-income.

After my first few months I was earning a around $300 a month for only posting a few times per month.

In order to start a blog, you need two main things: a domain name and hosting.

For hosting, I recommend going with Bluehost. We’ve partnered with them to give you a special deal of only $3.95 per month instead of their average $7.99 per month.

Not only that, but when you register as a new user for Bluehost, you get a FREE domain your first year, something that normally costs $10/year. All-in-all, you’re looking at paying under $50 per year to run a blog.

Still lost? Read these 7 tips on how I started a successful personal finance blog. Lost even more? Send me a personal email and I’ll be glad to help out.

2. Take Pictures Of Your Grocery Receipts

With the rise of receipt scanning apps, now you can earn cash back by taking pictures of your receipts. Get paid when you buy electronics, groceries, meals at restaurants, prescriptions and more.

One of the most popular receipt scanning apps out on the market today is Ibotta. Here’s a quick demonstration of how it works:

  1. Sign-up for a free Ibotta account and get a $10 bonus when you scan your first receipt.
  2. Browse their offers and activate any that may be of interest to you. For example, right now you can get $.25 cents in cash back on any purchase of a gallon of milk at Walmart. Expect to earn anywhere between $.25 to $5 in cash back per offer.
  3. Take a picture of your receipt. Make sure it’s on a flat surface so Ibotta can read it clearly, or else you may not get credited. In order to receive credit, you must buy a specific product at a specific retailer.
  4. Wait up to 48 hours to receive your cash back.
  5. Once your account reaches a minimum balance of $20, you can cash out to PayPal, Venmo or a gift card that you get to choose.

Looking for other apps like this? Be sure to check out our list of 11 apps like Ibotta.

NoteAlthough you can only use your receipt once per app, this doesn’t mean that you can’t use the same receipt for multiple apps. For example, you can earn cash back on the same receipt by scanning it with Ibotta, Fetch Rewards and Shopkick.

3. Get Paid To Walk In Stores

Shopkick is a popular rewards app that pays you each time you walk into one of their partnered retailers. When you walk into the store with your bluetooth activated, Shopkick will send you a notification.

Verify that you’re in the store and earn points in the form of “kicks.” These kicks can be exchanged for gift cards and other cool cash prizes.

Shopkick also pays you to complete other tasks such as scanning receipts, shopping online and and scanning in-store barcodes.

You get a 250 kick bonus when you sign-up as a new user, and I usually find that each month I’m able to claim at least one free gift card. If you’re looking for more ways to earn with Shopkick, you can read our full Shopkick review.

4. Take Online Surveys For Free

Companies are always looking for consumers’ opinions in order to improve their products and services. One of the best ways to get your opinion is to pay you for taking surveys.

I’ve found that just by keeping a firm list of 10 survey sites on hand, I’m able to earn an extra $300 per month or more. Keep in mind that these sites are not designed to help you replace your full-time income, but rather help you earn some side cash.

Here’s a quick list of some of our favorite survey sites:

If you’re looking for more survey sites for creative ways to earn extra money, check out our list of the 25+ best survey sites out there.

5. Teach English Online

Teaching English online is quickly becoming a popular method of earning extra cash online. Now there are lots of apps & websites that help connect English teachers with students from across the world.

The best part about these programs? Most of the time, there’s no experience required. That means all you have to do is sign-up and create a profile to get accepted.

Expect to earn a minimum of $10 per hour, but with programs like VIPKID you can easily earn $18/hour. However, VIPKID is one of the few programs that has a strict interview process.

To increase your income and your students, be sure to prepare well for your classes so that your students leave you positive reviews. Another good tip is to apply for more than one program to increase your chances of having classes.

6. Link Your Credit/Debit Card With With Drop

Drop is a newly-released app in the US that pays you for making purchases at specific retailers. No coupons, no taking pictures of receipts and no work.

All you have to do is create an account and link your credit or debit card to the app. From there, select from up to 5 retailers that you’d like to earn cash back app.

Each time you make a purchase at one of those retailers with your card, you earn cash back automatically. Reach a minimum of $5 in your account to cash out for a gift card of your choosing.

Earn a $1 bonus when you link your cash and use the promo code frugal4less at sign-up. To learn more about the Drop app, you can read our our full Drop Review.

7. Use Cash Back Portals

You should be using a cash back portal every time you shop online. These portals are websites that have partnered with thousands of retailers across the internet and have placed their affiliate links onto one page.

When you sign-up and click on one of those links to make a purchase, they earn a small commission. Instead of keeping this money to themselves, they give it back to you in the form of cash back.

Sound confusing? It can be at first. Let’s start with a quick example.

  1. One of our favorite portals is TopCashback. You get a $10 bonus as a new user and they often have the highest cash back rates around.
  2. After you register, search for the retailer you wish to shop at. The results will display the amount of cash back you can earn for that retailer. Right now, they’re offering 7% cash back on all purchases at Walmart (keep in mind there are a few exceptions such as gift cards). These rates are subject to change.
  3. Click on the “Get Cashback” button to be redirected to the retailer’s website. From there, make your purchase like you normally would. TopCashback will track your purchase using cookie technology.
  4. Within 10 days receive cash back in your account. Once you reach a minimum of $10 in earned cash back, you can cash out for gift cards or PayPal.

Some other popular shopping portals out there are BeFrugal and Ebates (also gives you cash back for in-store shopping).

8. Refer Friends To Amazon Prime

All members of Amazon are eligible to the Amazon Prime referral program. Each time you refer a friend to Amazon Prime, you earn a bonus of $5. There’s no limit to the amount of referrals you can make.

Keep in mind that you can only use one $5 credit at a time. For example, let’s say you’ve earned $10 in credit. For your next purchase, you can only use $5 of your credit. The remaining $5 will have to be saved for a future purchase.

9. Watch Videos From Your Phone

Swagbucks is one of my favorite rewards programs out there because it’s an app that pays you to watch videos from your phone. Not only that, but you can also earn cash taking surveys, completing free-trials online, clipping coupons and more.

The best part about Swagbucks? You don’t need to click a button to go to the next video. This means that once you start the videos, you don’t have to do anything. In essence, you’re actually earning a passive income.

There are other apps that pay you to watch videos from your phone, but none of them are as passive as Swagbucks.

10. Rent Out Your Friendship is a truly unique way to make money, and yes, through the website, you really do rent out your friendship.

The best things about it? You can be your own boss, set your own hours and price and keep 100% of the money you charge.

Once you’re approved (after filling out an application form) your completely free profile is live on You negotiate the price, time and activity—and only paid members of can contact you.

Activities you can do with your friends are unlimited—and completely up to you. They can include sporting events, parties, weddings, concerts, workout partner, wingman/woman, business events, etc.

The possibilities for absolutely platonic friendship are unlimited.

11. Decluttr

Decluttr is a great way to sell the CDs, DVDs, games, books and other techy things that are taking up space on your bookshelf. It’s simple to use, too.

For example, if you have some old DVDs laying around, you can simply scan your barcode with your smart phone or enter in the barcode (without spaces or dashes) and Decluttr will instantly spit out how much they’ll pay you to take old stuff off your hands.

You can also sell tech or cell phones, and can even sell LEGO items (you weigh the LEGOs). Through Decluttr’s valuation engine, you’ll always get an instant offer.

You’ll need a minimum of $5 to complete an order, and once you’re done choosing items to sell, you can pack them into any box and ship to Decluttr for free. Payments to your account are speedy, and you’ll get paid they day after Decluttr receives your items.

You can choose to get paid by check or direct deposit.

Ultimately, using Decluttr is a great way to make room in your closet and make money off things you don’t use.

12. Sell Your Photos

If you’ve got solid photography skills and are willing to take stock photos, selling your photos might be a no-brainer.

Here are a couple of websites to check out:

Shutterstock is a one-stop shop for those looking for really cool content, as you might already know. As a Shutterstock contributor, you’ll earn royalties each time one of your approved images or videos is downloaded by a Shutterstock customer.

There are several ways to earn money through Shutterstock:

  • 25-A-Day downloads: 25 cents per image
  • On Demand downloads: $1.88 per download
  • Enhanced downloads: $28 per download
  • Referred Subscription downloads: 20% commissions by referring more customers to Shutterstock
  • Single downloads: 20% of the sale price when photos get sold as single images
Getty Images

Getty Images as well as iStock (owned by Getty Images) are two other options for making money selling photos. iStock is not exclusive, however, while Getty Images does obtain exclusive rights to your photos.

You’ll make less because the price of photos is lower for iStock. Getty Images can allow you to make some serious money if your photography is really, really good. A high res image can be listed at over $500.

With iStock, the base rate is 15% for images. If the photos you’re selling are $12, that means you’ll earn $1.80 per image.

13. Become A Field Agent

No, we’re not talking CIA agent. However, the idea is kind of the same. To earn money as a field agent, you’ll use the Field Agent app to create a profile and find “missions.” Essentially, you’ll help companies by taking photos of what their products look like in stores.

You may help companies determine what their store displays look like, whether companies’ products are in stock, for example.

Furthermore, you might also help companies determine whether products are priced correctly, all just by doing mobile audits (taking photos with your smartphone).

You can earn anywhere from a few dollars up to $12, and money should show up in your Paypal or Dwolla account within 48 hours after completing a job.

14. Rent Out Your RV is a peer-to-peer rental marketplace for those who have a camper and would like to make money off of it when it’s not on the road.

You can list your RV for free and can earn $120-$365 a day, depending on the make and model of your RV. In addition, every rental is provided with liability, collision and comprehensive insurance coverage.

If you rent your RV, RVshare securely handles and deposits all payments directly into your bank account. There’s also the benefit of free 24/7 roadside assistance, including towing, for those who rent your vehicle.

In addition, you’re in control and can decide who rents your RV, when and for how much money.

15. Use GoBaby To Rent Out Your Baby Stuff

GoBaby, if not an answer to a prayer, is at least the best, most efficient way for parents to travel with their kids. It’s a website for renting baby gear from local parents wherever they go.

The website allows parents to type in the American city they’re visiting (it doesn’t appear that overseas destinations are available) and search for rental items to their heart’s content.

If you’re on the other end of the spectrum. If you live in a major metropolitan area and want to make money renting out your baby stuff to traveling parents or local grandparents, it’s a snap.

It’s free to list your baby gear and you keep 80 percent of the transaction fee. You set your prices and delivery hours, so it’s under your control.

It’s a great idea if you’ve got a six-year-old who can’t use most of the baby equipment anymore. Why not rent it out.

16. Be A House Or Pet Sitter

I have a friend who, during college, spent her whole summer house sitting for two traveling professors. She found herself in really cool digs for free for the whole summer, and actually earned money on the side.

That could be you! Use your connections for house-sitting and/or your love of all things furry (or scaly!) for pet-sitting to either score an awesome vacation location for free, or earn money doing it, too.

A couple of websites could also help you out:

17. Get Paid To Exercise

Try out Achievement. Check out Achievement’s Health Survey, as the Achievement app will then begin sharing tailored surveys, health programs and online research studies with you.

If you do healthy activities such as walking, meditating, food logs or join challenges, you’ll get cash in exchange for the points you earn.

According to Achievement’s website, they’ve paid out over $500,000 and you can earn $10 for every 10,000 points you earn. Just for signing up for the app, you’ll receive points.

18. Give Local Tours

Learn to give on-foot tours as a local guide. Lots of towns need tour guides, including local museums, tourist destinations, etc. Or, check out and more specifically, read the Become a ToursByLocals Tour Guide information

You can also check with your local chamber of commerce. Another option: if you’re a college student, look into giving tours for your college campus. There’s likely some work study dollars available there for you.

If you’ve got personality-plus, this could be a great job for you.

19. Donate Plasma

A couple of guys from my office donate plasma at least a once a month, and they make some decent money doing it, too, particularly because they don’t have to do much of anything. In fact, they usually just sit in a chair and mess around with their iPhones for an hour and a half.

If you’re available to sit for that long and aren’t needle-averse, you can expect to be paid anywhere from $20 to $50 and can even be paid more if you donate more often.

There are some other qualifications, too, which can be found at

Plus, the benefit to donating plasma is that you’re helping people with blood clotting disorders and other diseases. If you look at it that way, it’s completely win-win, right?

20. Rent Out Your Driveway

If you live in a large city where parking space is precious, out-of-towners might just jump at the chance to park where you live. You can rent out your driveway, or your car park, empty hotel space, or anywhere else people can park a vehicle through

It’s free to add your space on the JustPark website, and you can control your availability easily—just rent out your driveway or parking space when it works for you. You can then be paid through Paypal or payments can go straight into your bank account—your choice.

21. Sell Scrap Metal

Think about the millions of tons of scrap metal sitting around—do you have some in your house? Here are some lucrative alloys you can look into scrapping at your local scrap yard:

  • Steel
  • Brass
  • Copper
  • Aluminum
  • Iron

If you have a vehicle for hauling and lots of broken-down appliances in your basement, you’re halfway there. Essentially, it’s a load-it-up and go operation. Note: The larger your haul, the more money you’ll collect.

If you have wires, automobile parts, plumbing materials, etc. you can check out to determine approximately how much money your collection could bring you.

Check out a fantastic and well-detailed explanation of how to sell your scrap metal on wikiHow.

22. Be A SCUBA Diving/Surfing/Water Sports Instructor

I got this idea while I was on vacation in Mexico last week. A guy from Brazil was living in Puerto Vallarta, working on his instructor development course to become a professional dive instructor. Though he was far away from home, you don’t have to be.

It’s possible to capitalize on your talents as a water sports enthusiast (SCUBA, surfing, water skiing, or other!) to teach others how to do it, too.

Plus, there are likely always openings at your local pool for teaching swimming lessons. Parents are always willing to pay great so their kiddos learn how to swim, and sometimes, they’re more likely to be willing to pay an adult to teach rather than a high school kid.

By the way, this brings up a whole other channel of options: Teaching in general. Whether it’s yoga, tutoring, teaching English online, how to knit, music lessons, whatever! Goodness, there are so many options in this area.

You might even check out Udemy, an online teaching platform that allows individuals to teach on a variety of subjects, including the ones listed above. As an instructor, you can create your own content on Udemy, and you receive 100% of the revenue.

23. Be A Rabbit

Or become a Tasker for TaskRabbit, that is.

If you’re a handyman, cleaner, furniture assembler, or can help move, deliver or assist, becoming a Tasker for TaskRabbit might be for you. These are just a few of the popular categories. There are more; if you can think of a task, it’s likely you can do it.

To become a Tasker, you simply need to register online and attend a Tasker onboarding orientation session in your city. Then, simply download the Tasker app and accept your first job.

It’s easy to find a job: TaskRabbit notifies you of potential jobs nearby. You select the one you’d like to complete, and you do the work. At the end, simply submit an invoice for the job.

If you’re into feel-good deeds, you can also work for TaskRabbit For Good, and it’s just like it sounds. It’s a great way to get volunteer hours in through volunteerism opportunities in your community (once you’ve earned some money as a Tasker first, of course).

24. Join A Local Facebook Group To Sell Your Stuff

In my community, we’ve got a couple of huge Facebook groups: One for selling anything, the other for selling exclusively kids’ stuff. Here’s an example of one in Lake/McHenry Counties in Illinois.

It’s like having a garage sale without the hassle of having a garage sale. It allows you to show detailed photos of what you’re selling and keeps track of items you’ve still got for sale (which may help you track what you’ve listed in the past).

These groups also offer discussion-based options, where the admin for my community lists the rules of the group. These include:

  1. Amount of posts allowed
  2. Rules for bumping posts
  3. Rules for buying on the group
  4. What isn’t allowed on the group page
  5. Warnings

It’s easy to do a search on Facebook for what’s available in your community, and I find it to be more reliable than Craigslist—particularly because I live in a smaller town and I know and trust the people who are selling things on the site.

That might not be the case if you live in a large city, but it’s still a great option for finding things you need!

25. Design Tattoos

If you’re an artist, and if you’re into tattoos, why not design for a tattoo site? Artists can create an artist account at, which is free to register. All you have to do is go to the marketplace, submit a design and set a price for your work.

It’s also possible to draw and sell your designs to already existing tattoo shops—building a portfolio is totally necessary. You can also sell your tattoo art and promote yourself through a blog as well.

F, whether you use a website or sell directly to a tattoo shop, getting a lawyer to copyright all your work is also a necessity. If you’ve got the talent, know what people want, and can market yourself, do yourself a favor and make money off of it! There’s truly a ton of money to be made off of selling tattoo art.

26. Play Video Games For Money

Every gamer’s dream, right? If you check out E-Sports Earnings, you can see that there’s major money to be won doing the same thing that teenagers and college kids do every day, for hours on end. Skillz is one website which is currently featuring 200 mobile games and which runs 100,000 tournaments daily.

How do gamers make money?  They can enter gaming tournaments for a fee. Each tournament has different entry fees. At the end of tournaments, Skillz can pay out lots of money in cash prizes, which can range from $1 to thousands of dollars.

Gamers who want to earn lots of money need to be good—really good. It’s worth it to for newbies to cut their teeth on games that don’t cost as much before getting good enough to enter high-stakes tournaments.

In some of the creative money-making ideas presented here, a major theme is: if you’re good at something, why not make money off of it? It is truly amazing what types of skills people will pay for.

However, there are a lot of things you can do that don’t require any discernable talent whatsoever. For example, donating plasma and selling scrap metal don’t require much in the way of a Ph.D. in neuroscience. Most important is to identify a need that people have and capitalize on it.

Final List

We hope you enjoyed this list of 25+ creative ways to make money. If you see one that’s not on this list and should be, let us know in the comments below. Thanks for reading and happy frugaling!
