No matter what type of skin you have, finding the right products for it can be confusing. It can also be pretty expensive, too. This is particularly true if you prefer using more natural skincare items that contain less inactive ingredients, dyes, and so on. Instead of spending hundreds of dollars per year on potential remedies, why not try out your own DIY with skin care products?
From blackheads to age spots, essentially every skincare problem can be treated with homemade natural remedies. In the post below, the DIY skin care remedies are divided into categories for oily skin, dry skin, sensitive skin, and aging skin. We’ll discuss the active ingredients, why they work, and how you can make your own products at home. Let’s get started!
DIY Skin Care Recipes For Oily Skin
1. Face Wash
Making your own face wash may sound difficult, but it’s actually pretty easy. This article from Bustle.com has a great simple recipe you can try. You’ll need raw honey, fresh lemon juice, and a bit of water. Honey has healing antibacterial properties and lemon juice has antibacterial and antifungal properties. This is an excellent duo for oily skin, especially if it’s blackhead or acne-prone skin.
Witch hazel is one of my favorite ingredients for treating oily skin. It’s gentle because it’s naturally effective at removing excess oil. To create a DIY toner for oily skin, all you need is a small spray bottle and a bottle of witch hazel. Spritz the witch hazel onto a cotton ball and wipe your face after washing it.
I also like to keep a spray bottle of witch hazel that’s diluted with water. This makes a great refreshing spray that you can spray on your face anytime. You can even use rose water instead of regular water; it has gentle anti-inflammatory and cleansing properties.
3. Face Mask
There are tons of recipes for treating oily skin, but there’s one that I find very effective. The ingredients are a small investment up front, but you can make 100+ masks with them. I use ½ teaspoon of Molivera Organics Bentonite Clay, one capsule of Nature’s Way Activated Charcoal, and about one teaspoon of water. I follow the directions on the bentonite clay jar, and it does wonders for my oily skin and blackheads.
A 16-ounce bottle of Dickinson’s Alcohol Free Witch Hazel for DIY toner costs about $6. Compare this to Paula’s Choice SKIN BALANCING Pore-Reducing Toner, which costs about $21 for a 6.4-ounce bottle. You can save $15 and get 2.5 times the amount of product by using the simple DIY option.
DIY Skin Care Recipes For Dry Skin
A toner made simply from rose water is ideal for dry skin. As mentioned above, it’s cleansing and anti-inflammatory yet very gentle. It’s also hydrating and moisturizing, so you can quench your skin while cleansing it.
When you have dry skin, it’s crucial to use an ultra-hydrating moisturizer. You also need to avoid drying ingredients like alcohol, so making your own moisturizer is ideal. Using a non-comedogenic oil – an oil that does not clog pores – is a simple and effective way to nourish your skin.
This article about non-comedogenic oils is very useful, and a few of my favorites are argan oil and sweet almond oil. Both of the oils I’ve linked are highly rated on Amazon, organic, and a great match for dry skin. You only need to use a pea-sized amount or less, so one bottle of oil goes a very long way!
6. Face Mask
I’ve come across many DIY mask recipes for dry skin, but this ultra-enriching one stood out to me. This recipe from Bustle.com contains only three easily accessible ingredients. Additionally, each of these ingredients has proven benefits for dry skin. The recipe calls for combining one teaspoon of aloe vera, one teaspoon of olive oil, and ½ of a mashed avocado.
Aloe vera is well known for soothing dry, inflamed and irritated skin. Olive oil is a rich natural moisturizer and it has a Level 2 comedogenic ratings; oils are rated 0-5 with 5 being the worst for skin. Lastly, avocados contain vitamins, fats, and antioxidants that can benefit dry, dehydrated skin. Combining these three ingredients together gives your skin an outstanding amount of rejuvenation.
A four-ounce bottle of PURA D’OR Moroccan Argan Oil is about $17, and you only need to use a pea-sized amount. This really allows you to get your money’s worth! A 4.2-ounce bottle of Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion for dry skin is about $33 on Amazon. You can save $16 while using a pure, nourishing oil without any added ingredients.
DIY Skin Care Recipes For Sensitive Skin
7. Face Wash
I read several different face wash recipes, but many of them suggested using coconut oil. While I’m an avid fan of coconut oil, it ranks at a Level 4 on the comedogenic scale. So while using it on your body can be fine, you may find that it leads to blackheads or breakouts if used on your face.
After doing some research, I found that mango butter (a Level 0) or shea butter (a Level 0) are better alternatives. Combine about three tablespoons of one of these melted butters (for moisturization) with one tablespoon of organic raw honey (for cleansing). If it doesn’t irritate your skin, you can add one teaspoon of baking soda for exfoliation.
Store the mixture in a small jar and wash your face using a pea sized amount. You can use a cosmetic spatula to scoop the face wash out of the jar. As you apply it to your skin, the solid formula will quickly melt. Use it like you would any other face wash and rinse thoroughly when you’re done.
Finding a toner for sensitive skin can be tricky; they’re often full of alcohol and other irritants. I read that raw, unfiltered apple cider vinegar (ACV) is a good alternative to traditional toners. A blog post from CoconutsAndKettleBells.com explains that apple cider vinegar helps balance your skin’s natural pH level without the use of harsh ingredients.
The post suggests combining one part raw unfiltered apple cider vinegar with four parts distilled water. You can store the toner in any kind of spray bottle or container you’d like, and apply it to your skin with a cotton ball. Your DIY toner doesn’t need to be stored in the refrigerator. Simply keep it on hand and use it after washing your face.
9. Face Mask
The two-ingredient oatmeal and honey face mask is suitable for most skin types. I put a small spin on it to make it a bit more gentle and nourishing for sensitive skin. This recipe uses three ingredients – oatmeal, honey, and chamomile tea.
You only need about ½ cup of oatmeal, a few tablespoons of honey, and enough tea to cook the oatmeal. You can play with the measurements a bit to get a consistency that you like.
I like to blend oatmeal in the blender before using it in masks; this makes the formula much more smooth. Once you mix the ingredients, let the mixture cool before applying the mask. Wear it for about 15 minutes before rinsing thoroughly with warm water.
As always, use raw and organic honey for its antibacterial properties. You can use any type of plain oatmeal that you’d like. When preparing the oatmeal, use organic chamomile herbal tea instead of hot water. Chamomile is very gentle, soothing, and it can help reduce inflammation. It also has antibacterial and antiseptic benefits to help cleanse your skin.
A 16-ounce bottle of Bragg Organic Raw Apple Cider Vinegar is about $10.50. For the toner recipe, it’s diluted with four parts water, so one bottle goes an incredibly long way. Compare that to Aubrey Organics Calming Skin Therapy Toner for sensitive skin.
It costs around $12.50 for a 3.4-ounce bottle. You can save $2 while getting nearly five times the amount of product (that doesn’t even factor in the massive savings you get by diluting the ACV!).
DIY Skin Care Remedies For Aging Skin
As I mentioned earlier in this article, witch hazel makes an excellent toner for many skin types. You can use it as the base of a DIY anti-aging toner, too. Just add in one inexpensive ingredient to get the rejuvenating benefits you’re looking for!
For this toner recipe, combine equal parts witch hazel with brewed organic green tea. When applied to skin, the polyphenols in green tea can slow down signs of aging skin. Green tea is packed full of natural antioxidants, which is why it’s a common ingredient in expensive skincare products. Brew your own to create a simple but effective toner. If you want to give it a pleasant scent and extra soothing properties, add a few drops of lavender essential oil.
11. Face Mask
This is yet another DIY face mask that uses organic raw honey as a primary ingredient. Combine 3-4 tablespoons of raw honey with one teaspoon organic nutmeg and one teaspoon of licorice root powder. If the mixture seems too thick, add a few drops of water. Apply to skin and let it set for about 20 to 30 minutes. Rinse well with warm water and follow up with your preferred face wash.
So, we’ve already covered the many benefits of raw honey. Nutmeg powder has anti-inflammatory properties and it can lighten blemishes like sun spots. Licorice root powder can brighten skin and protect against UV ray damage. This makes the trio of ingredients an excellent pick for fighting the numerous signs of aging, and it may protect your skin’s overall health.
12. Wrinkle Cream
There are so many pricey anti-wrinkle creams on the market, and there’s no doubt that many of them work. However, it’s all about the active ingredients that fight wrinkles. You can create your own anti-wrinkle cream using 1) a moisturizing base like shea butter, and 2) wrinkle fighting agents like Vitamin A (AKA retinol) and Vitamin E.
You can buy Vitamin A softgels instead of buying a bottle of Vitamin A serum – there’s about a $15 to $25 price difference. Vitamin E softgels and Vitamin E oil itself are both fairly inexpensive, but the softgels are cheaper.
Mix a few tablespoons of softened shea butter with about 1-2 teaspoons each of Vitamin A or Vitamin E oil. I simply get the oil from Vitamin E softgels using a sterile needle. Mix well and store in a small airtight container. You can apply the gentle cream nightly before bed.
Vitamin A or Retinol is one of the primary ingredients used in anti-aging serums, creams, washes, and more. Retinol boosts collagen in skin and helps with new skin cell production. Vitamin E has antioxidants and other properties that fight the signs of aging. When you combine the two, you’ve got an excellent duo that can give you younger, healthier looking skin.
The ingredients for the wrinkle cream listed here cost about $32 total, and you’ll have enough shea butter to make literally dozens of batches. A one-ounce container of Estee Lauder wrinkle cream costs $65.00 in department stores. Save yourself $33 and get so much more product by creating your own wrinkle cream!
