Sometimes it may be difficult to find some extra work to supplement your income. You can always pick up a second job, but with our already busy lives, it may be nearly impossible to find work that’s convenient and fits around our hectic, daily schedule.
That’s why it’s usually best to find work that’s online-based, meaning that you can work from nearly anywhere provided that you have a stable internet connection. This is what Scribie is for.
Scribie offers home-based, online transcription jobs. What this means is that you have to listen to recordings in English and type out exactly what you hear.
The great thing about Scribie is that you can choose when you want to work. If you have a few hours to kill and want to make a few dollars, you can simply log into your account and get started right away. The best part is that there’s no cap on your income, meaning you can virtually make as much money as you want provided that you put effort into it.
How Much Does Scribie Pay?
The pay structure for Scribie consists of a base for the amount of hours of audio transcribed as well as bonuses for the amount of files transcribed.
For every hour of raw audio transcribed, you will be offered a payout of $10. This does not include the amount of time and effort that you put into each transcript.
Each audio file is only set at six minutes in order to avoid members spending too much time per file. This allows you the flexibility to work in a quick transcription if you only have a little bit of spare time to kill.
The amount of time and effort put into each transcription job really depends on the audio file. From personal experience, I would estimate that each 6 minutes of audio takes a minimum of 15 minutes to complete. However, for the more difficult files, they can easily take up to 30 minutes of your time. This includes listening, typing and review.
Make sure to plan accordingly and preview the file before you begin writing. A lot of audio files are foreigners speaking in a heavy accent, so it may be difficult to understand. If you can’t understand what’s being said in the audio very well, skip to an easier one that has only native English speakers present or foreigners with a good English-speaking accent.
On an hourly basis, it may not seem worth it to put so much work in to transcribing audio for just the base pay. Yet keep in mind that the more you transcribe, the better you will get. The first few files are always a little difficult.
The bonus pay is where you can really rake in some extra cash. For every 3 hours of audio transcribed, you will be paid an extra $10. The three hours is reset on a monthly basis. If you only have 2 hours and 50 minutes of audio transcribed, do an extra 2 files so you can receive that added bonus.
Lets figure out how much you can earn from this. If you were to submit only one six-minute file each day, you’ll receive a base pay of $30 plus a bonus of $10, making a total of $40 per month.
If you submit 1 hour of transcribed audio per day, you’ll have a nice paycheck of $300 for the base pay and an extra $100 for the bonus for a total of $400 dollars per month. Based on how much time it takes to complete each subscription, it will you about 2.5 hours per day to earn this amount. Not bad for being able to stay at home and simply typing what you hear.
The flexibility is key. Files can be transcribed at all times during the day and completed at any time. Just make sure that once you start a project you finish within a two-hour timeframe. You can request more time, but it usually isn’t needed and will reflect poorly to the reviewers.
You can request a payment at any time and there are no minimum payout requirements, as seen with most programs. This is great if you need cash right away. Payments are usually made within 1 business day.
I advise one word of caution, however. If you withdraw under $30 to your PayPal account, you will be charged a 2% fee. This is why I always wait until I at least have $30 in my Scribie account.
If you timeout from your internet connection or decide to cancel, no penalties will be incurred on your account. Files will never be longer than 6 minutes.
While anyone may apply to Scribie, not everyone is accepted. Before you are accepted you must take a practice test in order to qualify. This consists of listening to one, six-minute audio file and transcribing it. You have a choice of choosing one file from a list of 10 when taking the exam.
Before you begin, make sure to look at and listen to some of the samples listed on their page. Otherwise, you won’t have a good idea as to what they’re looking for in terms of how each transcription is structured.
If you’re not confident about your English skills or have difficulty understanding foreign accent, DO NOT try to transcribe one of these difficult audio files for the test. The easiest one on the test was an audio file from the TV show Late Night with Conan O’Brien. If you’re a native English speaker, you should have no difficulty in understanding every word.
Here is a list of all of the requirements per Scribie’s website:
- Fast typing speed of at least 35 wpm
- An excellent comprehension of the English language
- A verified PayPal account (You need to link your bank or credit card in order to become verified)
- A stable internet connection
- Adobe Flash Player
- High-quality speakers or headset for listening
As long as you meet the requirements above, I encourage you to apply. Since there are so many applicants, you’ll have to wait in line for your turn. I only had to wait about two weeks before my first transcription test, but Crazed Mama’s Blog reported waiting a total of 470 days!
If you’re even the slightest bit interested in Scribie, make sure to apply as soon as possible to secure a spot in line.
Are There Extra Ways to Earn Cash With Scribie?
If you become great at transcribing audio files and the reviewers believe that you’re doing an excellent job, you have the opportunity to be promoted to a reviewer. The pay is higher and the flexible hours are the same. This means that instead of transcribing raw audio, you will be reviewing submissions instead.
Your performance is based on a scale of 1 to 5, with a rating of 5 (A+) being the highest. Each file you submit is graded. If you have an average score of 3.25 or higher after submitting one full hour of transcribed audio, you will be considered for a promotion to a reviewer.
From there on you can be promoted to a proofreader and quality checker.
Scribie also has an affiliate program. If you’re earning extra money, tell your friends and get them to sign-up using your affiliate link. If you’d like to support Frugal For Less, you can use our affiliate link here.
There is no set limit on the amount you receive from affiliate earnings. There’s a 10% commission for each order by a referred customer, along with a 5% commission directly from their earnings.
Scribie is perfect for those who need some extra cash without committing to a specific schedule. You have the potential to earn up to $400 dollars extra a month for only 2.5 hours a day of work. Keep in mind that this number only includes audio files that are easy to understand. More difficult ones may take much longer to thoroughly transcribe.
