Selling in a marketplace means you are selling goods and services in an online market for profit.
These can be handmade items, drop shipped products, locally or internationally sourced products and more. Marketplace sales is appealing because of the exposure, security, and the ability to start making money fast.
Marketplaces online are huge. They receive millions of visitors every month and if sellers are members of this market, they’ll get a piece of that traffic.
This is advantageous because it’s a lot easier to get a piece of existing traffic than trying to create your own traffic, especially with no experience.
Additionally, these marketplaces are huge companies, fully staffed with web security in place, SSL encryption, the ability to process payments from your customers and pay you. There are a ton of benefits associated with being a marketplace seller.
When I ventured into ecommerce years ago, I tried my hand at a few marketplaces and saw success with every one. I went from zero to $2,000/week with Amazon and it happened almost overnight. This was before Amazon Prime and Amazon FBA. I also began making $6,000/month regularly after a few months on consistent sales on another big marketplace.

6. Sell on Ebay
Ebay is the marketplace to sell your stuff. New, like new, good, fair, or used condition, you can sell virtually anything on Ebay.
I’ve long used this market to sell extras around the house. Every Spring and Winter, we do a big clean in our household. In this Spring cleaning or Winter cleaning, we go room by room and make a big pile of extras in our house. Here are some examples:
- Outgrown kids clothes
- Small appliances
- Clothes and shoes
- Home decor goods, pillows, and linens
Then, we sell off these items, usually on Ebay.
Why People Love Ebay?
It’s one of the easiest ways to sell your stuff online. What sets it apart from other online markets is that it is truly meant for the consumer, by the consumer. It’s a very user-friendly platform and you can list your item for sale in less than 5 minutes!
How to Make Money with Ebay?
You can start earning by selling extras around your home but once you run out of stuff to sell, where do you turn next?
There are 2 routes to take:
- Sourcing and flipping goods
There is a big market in this. You find used (mostly) goods and sell them online. You can source in places like:
- Thrift stores
- Flea markets
- Discount stores
- Retail stores
The idea is to find products at a discount and then flip them for a profit. You learn more about flipping from Flea Market Flipper.
With the wholesale market, you purchase goods at wholesale prices, from suppliers, then resell on Ebay. Wholesale products are usually sold in lots so you may need more startup capital to get a good variety of inventory.
How much can you make?
This is tough to answer. It depends on many factors like your selling volume, profit margin, types of products you are selling, etc.
Aside from selling during a season’s cleaning, I also sell during the holidays for some extra holiday cash. It’s not unusual for me to earn $500-$600 in a month on Ebay, part-time.

How to Sell?
Listings are usually free up to a certain number of items. I’ve listed up to 25 items for free on Ebay. Throughout the year Ebay has listing specials too, offering up to 100-500 listings free.

7. Sell on Amazon
Amazon is the #1 online marketplace. It’s a great place to sell your goods online and with the advent of Amazon Prime and FBA (more on this below), it’s easier than ever to get started as a seller and see success fast!
How Amazon selling works?
There are two options to sell on Amazon: individual and professional store.
Selling as an Individual Seller
As an individual seller, you pay a listing fee and you can list your goods one at a time on the market. Add new products to the Amazon catalog and be eligible for Amazon’s FBA (Fulfillment by Amazon) program where Amazon handles your customer service, shipping, and fulfillment. This is the way to go if you sell a few items.
Selling as a Professional Store

Networking, networking, networking! This is so crucial in life and especially true for freelancing. Make friends, be helpful, join communities and add value. Get on social networks and get social. Networking is very underestimated but it is super valuable. It’s true, sometimes it’s not what you know, it’s who you know.

Practice Makes Perfect
Practice makes perfect. The more you work at your craft, the better you’ll get. This means to continue to push yourself. Join contests, competitions, workshops, improve your education in your field, and other related tasks to continuously grow your skills, talent, and education over time.
Be aware and think creatively. Watch for new trends, creative design, market changes, and get inspired.

You can get paid to play on social media all day! Yes, this is a job. Businesses hire social media professionals to manage their social presence online.
Social media managers might do tasks like:
- Posting on social media on behalf of the company
- Interacting and engaging with consumers
- Responding to customer inquiries, questions, feedback
- Sourcing and creating engaging content to post
Social media is very important to businesses today. This job may not have existed 20 years ago but virtually every major company has this position now.
How to get started as a social media manager?
For this position, you must be detail-oriented, organized, and social media savvy. You can get started by reaching out to your own network first.
Do you have friends or family that may need a social media manager?
Or, how about your current employer?
Do they have need for an SMM?
A lot of small businesses may have other staff work the brand social media but it should really be a separate position that can receive focus all its own.

This change brought about fear and panic in a lot of people. Total beginners can become video editors. If you have the savvy to learn how to use editing tools and the patience to spend hours at a time on one video, this might be the job for you.

This is like being a personal assistant but, in an online setting.
If you’re organized, driven and a self-starter, you can be a virtual assistant. There is relatively low barrier to entry into this field since no specialized skills or formal education is required.
You will have the chance to help someone be more efficient in their work life or personal life.
First, determine what services you will offer: customer support, website management, social media help, organization and planning, etc.
Next, while not required, setting up a website to market your services is a good way to get yourself into the public eye as a professional virtual assistant.
Lastly, get jobs. Freelancer markets, social media, and reaching out to local businesses are typical ways VA’s secure work. Don’t be afraid to cold pitch. Contact businesses and pitch yourself. Focus on solving their problems and addressing their needs rather than listing specific tasks you perform.

As a VA, you’ll likely be an independent contractor so pay may vary from project to project. One of the things you’ll love about being a VA is the unlimited income potential.

Building a social media presence is a great compliment to your online website and another place for you to shine, share your work, talk about your skills, help others, and share value.
Find out where your audience dwells online and create a social profile on that network. Then, post regularly, interact and engage with fans, prospective clients, industry experts, and peers in your field.
Your social media account is the best free resource you can use for your business. Take advantage of it!
Networking and Relationship Building
Network. This is the best way to continue educating yourself, find out about industry news and changes, and find clients. In person or online, networking will be very beneficial. Don’t miss out on this!
How Much Can VA’s Make?
Gina became a VA and went zero to $4,000/month within 6 months!
Pay is usually hourly and VA’s can make $10 to $100 per hour, depending upon skillset. The lower end of the scale is usually for basic VA’s with limited skills or duties. The higher end of the scale goes to more specialized VA’s like web development virtual assistants, for example.

What does a digital marketer do?

He or she plays a major role in enhancing brand awareness within the digital space as well as driving website traffic and acquiring leads/customers.
So, this is online marketing, in a nutshell.
