For the past couple of weeks I’ve been using a service called ClassPass. Available in most major cities, it allows you to take classes multiple gyms instead of just one, all for a monthly fee.
What Is ClassPass?
Think of ClassPass as a secret card that gives you access to all gyms within the city that you’re living in rather than just limiting yourself to one gym. Located in most major cities across the world, you’re more than likely going to have over 50 gyms available and hundreds of classes to choose from each day.
The great thing about ClassPass is that the amount of classes you can take each month is unlimited. The only thing that you need to be aware of is that if you happen to like a particular gym, you can only workout at that gym a maximum of 3 times in a 30-day period.
There’s also a wide variety of classes to choose from, whether you just want some solo gym time or would like to participate in a class setting. Here are the different categories of classes they have to offer:
- Martial Arts
- Strength Training
- Martial Arts
- Gym Time
How Much Does It Cost?
For a normal membership, you pay $79 per month with unlimited access to classes. If this seems like too much for you and want to give it a shot first, there’s also a two-week rial for just $19.
If you do register for the trial, the payments automatically roll over, so be sure to cancel if it’s not for you. Use this link when signing-up to automatically get $20 in credit toward your next ClassPass purchase.
If you end up really liking ClassPass and wish to continue, we recommend you just keep using it. If you deactivate your account, there is a reactivation fee if you wish to get back on. This is to prevent people from canceling and then registering again to keep getting the two-week trial price.
You also have the option of pausing your account for a certain amount of time if you wish to take a short break.
How Much Money Can I Save?
The amount you can save with ClassPass depends on the gym membership prices in your area, but if you’re a workout rat you won’t have any troubles justifying the cost.
I’m currently on the two-week free-trail in Portland and have tried a couple of conditioning classes. I spoke to the owner and it normally costs $140 for ten classes or $18 for a drop-in. The price for trial pass only costs a dollar over the cost of a drop-in. Take two classes and you’ve more than likely made up for the cost.
The trial also allows you to test out a lot of gyms in your area to find out which one is the right gym for you. If you’re new to a city or just want to visit a place for a short time, ClassPass is perfect.
Two weeks is enough to try a lot of classes in a short time. And trust me – since it is such a short time you’ll be motivated to workout more by trying to cram as many classes in as you can.
If you’re positive that you’re only going to participate in 5 classes or less in any 30-day period, you can also purchase the ClassPass Five which allows you to take up to 5 classes. This one only costs $45 per month.
Who Is ClassPass Not For?
ClassPass is great for those who like going to different places to workout. However, if you’ve found a a gym that you really enjoy working out at, it’s not for you since you can only workout at that gym 3 times in a 30-day period.
Even though there is this limitation, there’s usually enough gyms in your area so you won’t have to worry about not having a wide variety of places to workout.
If you’re into more specialized classes, you’d probably be better up signing-up for those places directly. These usually cost more but have a very specific skill set and these classes might not be available for you to choose on the ClassPass page.
Things To Be Aware Of
You have the option of canceling a class 12 hours in advance. Otherwise you’re left to pay a fee of $15. Even if you’re not feeling up to the class, try at least showing up and filling out a waiver form so that they can mark you as present.
Membership dues are also reoccurring, meaning if you don’t cancel your credit card will automatically be billed every 30-day period. You have the option to deactivate or pause your account in order to prevent this. Since reactivation costs a fee, we suggest simply pausing it indefinitely in case you ever want to come back.
How Do I Sign-Up?
If you’d like to give it a try, ClassPass is incredibly easy to sign-up for and can be done in just 4 easy steps.
1. Register. You can register for a new account by clicking this link here. We recommend starting with a two-week trial for just $19 to see how it is. You’ll need to enter in some personal information such as your name and email.
2. Select a class. Select from one of their classes on the list by clicking on the “Classes” tab in the navigation bar. There are currently over 150 classes listed for March 2nd in the Portland page. You can also sort by studio or category as well.
3. Sign-up. Sign-up for a class by hitting the reserve button. Make sure to show up a bit early if you’re new to a gym as you’ll need to fill out a waiver form.

ClassPass is great if you’re new to a particular city or want to give different gyms a shot. Having the time limit on a two-week trial is also a great motivator to get in shape.
