That’s right. You read the title of this article correctly. I’m going to tell you how to get a minimum of 8% back on all Amazon purchases. This includes every category, such as books, magazines, shoes, fashion and more. We can even take it a step further by getting up to 16.5% off on certain categories.
Many blogs already tell you you can get 5% cash back with specific credit cards such as the Chase Freedom Card, or by buying Amazon gift cards at the office supply store and getting 5% back through your credit card. These methods are great and all, but that’s still 3% off from the savings you could potentially generate.
If you’re set on saving the most money possible, this guide is for you. We’re going to jump right in and cover the steps necessary to get such a great deal.
Note: When reading this article, please be sure to follow the steps in the order they are listed. This will help with understanding the 8% cash back process, as some steps are confusing without the ones that precede them.
1. Get The Highest Cash Back Credit Card On All Purchases.
The first step is the most crucial, as it will allow us to max out our savings. We need to apply for the credit card that gives you the most cash back toward all purchases.
Currently, the highest card on the market for cash back is the either the Citi Double Cash Card or the Fidelity Card By American Express. Each gives you 2% cash back on all purchases and don’t come with any hidden or annual fees. We’ll do a quick comparison to see which card is best for you:
- 1% with all purchases and 1% when you pay your bill
- No cap on the amount of cash back received
- First time late payment fee is waived
- Cash back redeemable after earning $25 dollars in rewards
- No annual fee
- Free concierge service
- Incredible Citi benefits
And now for the Fidelity American Express Card:
- 2% back on all purchases
- No limits on rewards
- No annual fee
- Cash back redeemable after $25 in account
- Retail purchase protection from merchandise
- Travel and emergency assistance
While the two cards have their own benefits, they both do what we want them to do, and that’s getting 2% back on every purchase. I personally prefer the Fidelity American Express Card because sometimes there’s a $50 sign-up bonus. If you’d like a deeper comparison of the two cards, you can read my side-by-side comparison here.
Either of the cards will work for this process, and the high cash back will be very important for our next step.
2. Buy An American Express Gift Card
If you’ve read my guide on how to get 3.7% cash back on all purchases, then you already know how to do this second step. However, I’ll make sure to briefly cover it here.
We’re going to want to use one of our 2% cash back credit cards for this purchase, and we’ll use the Fidelity card for simplicity’s sake. From here we can bump up our savings by an extra 1%. This is done by buying an American Express Gift Card through what is called a cash back portal.
To find the best cash back portal, I prefer to use www.cashbackmonitor.com to find which gives the highest discount on these AMEX gift cards. By doing a quick search, I find that either TopCashback or BeFrugal offers the best discount. We find that when we use either of them, we get 1.5% cash back in our portal account toward any purchase of an AMEX gift card.
Once you’re signed-up for BeFrugal and log-in, search for American Express and click on one of the blue American Express Gift Card links to be taken to their page. Usually the first one you pick will be fine.
Fortunately, there’s a special going on where you get 2.2% back on everything purchased through American Express. I normally prefer to wait and purchase these gift cards when only there’s a promotion to maximize my savings.
Once you click on the blue link you’ll be redirected to the American Express website, and from there any purchase you make will give you an extra 2.2% off. On the final purchase page, just hit confirm payment and the card will be sent to you within a few business days.
Just make sure to use your Fidelity American Express or Citi Double Cash Card when making this purchase or you’ll be missing out on the 2% benefits that they offer. Some people report getting charged a cash advanced fee with the Citi Card for American Express Gift Cards. To be on the safe side, it might be best to go with Fidelity for this purchase.
Take note that by buying this card you are agreeing to pay for a purchase charge as well as a shipping charge. While this may seem like a waste of money, you usually have to pay them in order to get cash back from cash back portals.
TopCashback specifically states:
Please note that the use of a American Express® Gift Cards & Business Gift Cards promotional/coupon code not posted and approved by TopCashback, may affect your eligibility for cashback.
These portals have strict rules, and most of the time if you enter a promotion code that isn’t already on their webpage, you won’t be given any cash back. So be careful about searching for discounts on Google. Some people have stated that entering a promotion code won’t be detected by a cash back website, but you can try that at your own risk.
In any case, we’re still going to easily make our money back.
Let’s see how much we’re getting thus far:
- 2% back on $1,012.90 from using the Fidelity American Express Card = $20.26
- 2.2% back on $1012.90 from going through the BeFrugal Portal = $22.28
- We have to pay shipping and purchasing charges = -$12.90
This means we’re at a total savings of $29.64. from our $1000 gift card. $29.64 off of $1000 dollars is equal to 2.9% off.
From here on out, every purchase that we make with this American Express Gift Card will be equivalent to receiving nearly 3% off on all purchases as opposed to getting just 2% with a normal credit card.
I even recommend using a gift card on almost every purchase to maximize your cash back. You can read more on this in my article How To Get 3.7% Cash Back On All Purchases. I make sure to always have at least one of these handy for purchases like this.
Note: This step might be a little too much for some. If you want to skip this step, you can still use a 2% cash back credit card on step 3 and get 7% all Amazon purchases.
3. Purchase An Amazon Gift Card Through TopCashback and Raise
Now that we are guaranteed at least 3% on all purchases, we can continue on to our third and final step which gets us that extra 5% off by purchasing an Amazon gift card through Raise.
In order to get those percentage points, we first have to sign-up for the cash back portal TopCashback, just like we did in the step above. Once you sign-up and get registered, type in ‘Raise’ in the search bar at the top of the page.
By clicking on the ‘Get Cashback Now’ button, we are going to get an extra 1% off all purchases made through Raise. (At other retailers we’d be getting up to 5% off).
Once you click on the link, you’ll be redirected toward the Raise website. Go ahead and search for ‘Amazon.’ Every once in a while there will be an Amazon gift card available for 4% off.
Go ahead and purchase the Amazon gift card with your American Express Gift Card that we already received 3% off of. In this case, we’re getting a $25.00 Amazon Gift Card For Only $24.00 at 4% off.
Let’s take a look at our total savings:
- Using our American Express Gift Card on our purchase = 3%
- Going through the TopCashback portal = 1%
- Buying an Amazon.com gift card at a discount = 4%
Add the numbers all up and we’ve saved a total of 8%!
The best thing about Raise is that they are usually very quick about sending their gift cards. I usually receive mine within just a couple of minutes via email after purchase.
Once you get your gift card in your inbox, just go to the Amazon gift card redemption page and claim your gift card. A new balance will be added to your account. Enjoy!
How Do I Get Up To 16.5% Cash Back?
8% off of your total purchase price is pretty good, but sometimes we can do a bit better. We can get up to 16.5% off by using a cash back portal just like before.
After you complete the steps above and get your Amazon.com gift card, simply go through a cash back portal once again. The ones that are currently offering 8.5% on Amazon purchases are TopCashback and BeFrugal.
However, you aren’t guaranteed this every time, as that extra cash back is category dependent. TopCashback, for example, will give you 8.5% back on Jewelry and Watches but only 6% on Luxury Beauty products.
These cash back amounts as well as the categories fluctuate, so be sure to check back often. Here we have listed the usual product categories that give you extra cash back for going through a portal:
- Jewelry and Watches – 8%
- Luxury Beauty – 6%
- Shoes – 6%
- Handbags – 6%
- Sports & Fitness – 6%
- Baby – 6%
- Amazon Local – 6%
Even if the product you are buying doesn’t fall into one of these categories, at least you’re certain to get a minimum of 8% back.
Since this cash back method offers such a high discount, it would be abnormal for it to not come with any disadvantages. Here are 3 things that you should keep in mind when making these purchases.
1. These gift cards go quick.
The Amazon gift cards on Raise usually go out of stock really quickly, so it’s important to act fast. If you see a card at a discount, make sure to purchase it right away or it’ll be gone before you know it.
2. Set up alerts.
On Raise you can actually set up alerts that are sent to your email to notify you when there’s a specific gift card in stock.
Just search for the Amazon gift card and click the ‘Set Alert’ button like you see in the picture above. This way you don’t have to constantly be checking back if there’s one in stock.
3. High discount cards are usually low in value.
When you get an alert for a 4% off an Amazon gift card, it’s usually going to only be $25 dollars at a time. However, make purchases as frequently as possible and you’ll get a nice buffer in your Amazon account for gift cards that you purchased at 8% off.
The most frequent card I see on Raise is for 2% off, which isn’t bad. You’re only guaranteed 6% off all Amazon purchases this way but it’s much better than anywhere else.
The reason that this process seems like it takes a long time is because it does. Yet if you stick with it and get in some practice, I promise you it will only take you an extra 60 seconds using this method.
While Raise doesn’t always have 4% off Amazon gift cards, you might have to settle for a 2% one. This still isn’t bad, as you’re getting 6% off (and possibly up to 14.5%).
I’d like to hear about your experiences going through this process. Please leave them in the comments below. Thanks for reading, and let me know if you have any questions!
