How To Save 18%+ On All Products At The Dollar Tree

How To Save 18%+ On All Products At The Dollar Tree
Jason Wuerch Feb 19, 2016
Want to Earn Some Extra Money?

A lot of us go shopping at the Dollar Tree in order to save some money. They sell unpopular products that work just as well as more commonly-used ones for just $1.

With these 5 steps below, we can save an additional 15% on all products at the Dollar Tree. Make sure to follow the steps in order to get the maximum amount of cash back.

1. Get A Cash Back Credit Card – 2%

No matter what type of purchase you’re making, you should always use a credit card to buy it. If you’re not, you’re missing out on some free cash for no extra work. For our purposes, we’re going to want to apply for a credit card that gives us the most cash back on all purchases.

The one we suggest is the Citi Double Cash Card. It comes with no annual fee and gives you 2% cash back on all purchases – 1% when you make the purchase and an additional 1% when you pay off your bill. It’s one of the highest-rewarded credit cards out there that gives cash back no matter what type of item you’re buying.

This means that for every $1,000 you spend you’ll get an additional $20. While it may not sound like much, it adds up and there’s no extra work other than applying for the card itself. Let’s take a quick look at what other specs this card has to offer:

  • No annual fee
  • Get 2% cash back on all purchases
  • There’s no limit to the amount of cash back earned.
  • First late payment is waived
  • Excellent Citi Benefits
  • Free Concierge Service

In order to get approved for this card, we recommend that you have a minimum credit score of 700 before applying, otherwise there’s a high chance that you’ll get rejected. Remember, each time you apply for a new card your score drops slightly, but only by a few points. Keep paying off your card on-time and your score will bounce back up before you know it.

If you don’t want to apply for the Citi Card, we recommend the Discover It Card. It gives you 2% cash back on all purchases your first year and 5% cash back on certain categories that rotate quarterly. It also has no annual fee.

2. Use A Cash Back Portal

This step is only going to have you sign-up for a cash back portal, but we’re not going to use it just yet. Cash back portals are online websites that partner up with thousands of online retailers across the web. They post their affiliate links, and each time you click on one of their links to make a purchase, you get a certain amount of cash back.

There are tons of portals, but we’re only going to be using two for the purposes of this article. The ones that you’re going to want to sign-up for are Ebates and TopCashBack. Registration is 100% free for both of them.

TopCashBack is an excellent portal that usually has some of the highest cash back rates on the web. It only requires an email and your name to sign-up, and upon registration they automatically deposit a $10 bonus in your account. You need a minimum of $20 to cash out in the form of Amazon Gift Cards or a direct deposit to your PayPal account.

While Ebates usually doesn’t have as great of rates as TopCashBack, they have excellent referral bonuses and are partnered with the highest amount of retailers on the web. You get a $10 gift card of your choosing just for signing-up, and each time you refer a friend your referral bonus gets bumped up.

3. Sign-Up For A Gift Card Reseller

Instead of buying Dollar Tree products directly with our credit card, why not use a gift card that we can purchase at a discount? There are multiple gift card vendor websites that buy unwanted gift cards at a discount and then resell them for a price lower than their retail value. The one that saves us the most when shopping at the Dollar Tree is Raise.

Signing-up is 100% free, and you get $5 bonus when you use our referral link to register. All you need is an email and a phone number to register.

4. Buy Your Gift Card – 16%

Now we can finally get down to making some purchases. The first thing we want to do is log-in to our TopCashBack account and type in “Raise” in the search bar. The results should show that each time you make a purchase on the Raise website, you’ll be given 2% in cash back off of your total purchase.

Click on the “Cashback” button to be automatically redirected to the Raise site. Make your purchase like you normally would, but be sure to use the Citi Double Cash Card mentioned above to get an additional 2% off of your purchase. The gift card that we found saves us about 12%.

Raise is actually holding a sale this weekend, so if you find a card, type in TAKE5 as your promotion code to save an additional 5%. Take note that sometimes Dollar Tree gift cards aren’t available on their page. If this happens, you can setup alerts to inform you. Otherwise, check out our article on how to search for the highest-discounted gift cards across all gift card resellers.

For this step, we’re combining the TopCashBack Shopping Portal (2%), our cash back credit card (2%), and the discount we receive on the gift card itself (12%). This totals up to 16%.

The portal will automatically keep track of all of your purchases, and usually within 48 hours they’ll send you a confirmation email that verifies your purchase. Your gift card will take up to 24 hours to arrive in your inbox, but usually it arrives within the hour. Raise does a great job of making sure you get your gift card within a reasonable timeframe.

5. Make Your Purchase – 2%

Now we can use our Dollar Tree gift card to make our final purchase. Instead of shopping in-store, we can double dip and use another portal to purchase our products online. This time we’re going to be using the Ebates Shopping Portal to save us an additional 2%.

Log-in to their page and search for “Dollar Tree.” The results should display that you get 2% cash back on all purchases made on the Dollar Tree website. Click on the “Cash Back” link to be redirected to their website and make your final purchase.

Just use your gift card that you purchased so that you can incorporate all of your savings. There will also be a list of eligible coupons below that you can use in addition to getting back the 2%. There is a shipping cost on all products, which is why we recommend using their store pick-up option to get free shipping.

6. Let’s Recap Our Savings

Now that we’ve gone through all of the necessary steps, let’s go ahead and recap on how much we’ve saved and how we did it.

  • Cash Back Credit Card – 2%
  • TopCashBack To Purchase Raise Gift Card – 2%
  • Purchasing The Gift Card Through Raise – 12%
  • Ebates Portal To Make The Final Purchase – 2%
  • TAKE5 coupon code on Raise – 5%

Since we were able to use the coupon code, we saved a total of 23% on all purchases made at the Dollar Tree. However, we understand that not every weekend is going to have a sale, so we’re going to set the default saving rate to just 18%. If you don’t know whether Raise is having a sale or not, just type in the same coupon code – TAKE5  – upon checkout; it never changes.

7. Extra Step – Use Ibotta – Percentage Varies

There’s another way in which you can save even more on your Dollar Tree purchase by using the Ibotta app. This app pays you to scan receipts to your phone. If you buy a particular item at a store and it matches to what’s on the Ibotta app, you get a certain amount of cash back, anywhere from $.25 cents to a few dollars. The only requirement is that you take a picture of your receipt from your smartphone or email it in.

We looked through the listings and found a few good items. If you buy pasta, pasta sauce, cream, or bananas, you can save an additional $.25 cents on each of these items. That will definitely bump up your savings. If you’re new to receipt scanning apps, you can checkout our Full Ibotta Guide for more details.

Final Thoughts

It may seem like that these steps take a while to complete, and they will at first. But I promise you that once you sign-up for everything and get used to the process, it won’t take you more than an extra few minutes each time you shop. Comments or questions on the steps above? Leave them down below and we’d be more than happy to help out. Thanks for reading!
