Selling your clothes is one of my favorite ways to earn extra cash for many reasons.

  • There will never NOT be a demand for clothes. People have to wear something and nobody has the time to make their own clothes.
  • Regardless of the economy, people are always trying to save money and get the same things for cheap.
  • The old outfit you ditched because it’s “out of style”… Well, guess what? They’re back in style and somebody probably needs it for their IG photoshoot.
  • A handful of smart people realized these facts and decided to set up websites and apps that bridge the gap between people looking for affordable clothes and people like you who want to profit off getting rid of them.

With the strategies I’m going to show you in this ultimate guide, you’re going to learn how to get rid of your clothes in as little as the next seven days (and of course make some extra dough in the process).

How would you like to tap into the multi-billion dollar industry of reselling clothes?

Oh, and before we get started. Here’s another benefit I almost forgot to mention.

Just think about all the extra room you’re going to have in your room, apartment, or house? 

Decluttering is one of my favorite ways to make a quick improvement to my living environment. Having less clutter helps to improve your concentration & self-worth, boost your mood, and lower stress.

If you’re willing to put in a little work, then let’s get into this goldmine.

Step 1: Pick/Find Clothes To Sell

Believe it or not, there’s a market for just about everything in your closet online. Ranging from cheap shoes to Gucci Watches and everything in-between. People will buy your unused clothing, especially if they can’t find it in a store or online brand new.

If you have accessories like Jewelry and Watches, we’ll have plenty of options for you. If you have designer items, we’ll have a few options for those higher-priced items. You’ll want to be conscious of where you list expensive items.

To many people’s surprise, “mid-level” mall brands like Brooks Brothers, American Eagle, and Ralph Lauren have a decent resale value.

Also, keep these two things in mind:

  • Keep note of the season since weather determines the clothes people are looking for. Summer clothes sell better during the warmer months and vice versa. Still, don’t let this deter you from listing as much of your unwanted clothes as you wish.
  • Try to sort your clothes by niche if possible since you may be able to bundle items or get repeat sales on some marketplaces. You also may determine that a certain type of item sells better on one app compared to another.

Step 2: Find Out How Much They’re Worth

The best way to determine what your items are worth is by finding out what similar items already sold for. 

You don’t want to base your prices off of other unsold items because the majority of people are just guessing what they think their items are worth. Coincidentally, most people have trouble selling their clothing online. This is the main reason why.

If you’re selling an item on an auction site like eBay, set a minimum price you’re comfortable with if only a few people bid. If you’re selling an item at a fixed price, factor in the costs you’ll incur from shipping and marketplace specific fees

Step 3: Find Where To Sell Your Clothes

If you’re looking to sell your used clothes, we’re going to show you a few different options ranging from quick and easy to difficult and time-consuming.

The easy option is to take your clothes to a consignment shop. At a consignment shop, they’ll actually list and market your clothes for you. You’ll still own the items until they’re able to sell them so you can change your mind. Of course, consignment shops take a cut, usually about 50%, once your item sells.

Option two is to take your clothes to a thrift shop like Plato’s Closet, Buffalo Exchange, or Repeat Performance where they’ll give you a price on the spot and buy your clothes outright from you.

If you’re looking for immediate cash, these are the best options for you.

Option three, which is what this guide is actually about, is by listing and selling your clothes online.

Of course, this will take a bit of sweat equity and planning, but the financial rewards will be greater. You may also discover that you have a knack for this specific brand of entrepreneurship.

Anyways, you’ll want to pay close attention to the following list of websites.

Theoretically, you’d just pick the most popular site like eBay or Poshmark to sell your items. More customers surely equal quicker sales, right?

Not necessarily.

Some of the sites you may have never heard of, but they’re designed for people looking for a specific type of item.

When you list the right item on these sites, they can sell FAST.

Best Apps & Websites To Sell Clothes Online


Poshmark allows everyday people to make a few extra bucks selling their clothing online. Some people have even turned selling on Poshmark into a full-time income and eventually starting their own online boutiques. 

Don’t believe me? 

This seller Suzanne Canon has made over $1 million selling on Poshmark since 2012 and does it full time.

Since its launch in 2011, Poshmark has paid out over a billion dollars in commissions to its sellers. 

This app allows you to sell both women’s, men’s, and kid’s apparel and accessories. Just like Tradesy, the listing process is quick and simple when done through the app. All you have to do is upload up to seven pictures and a product description.

Like we mentioned above, you’ll want to be smart about pricing your items. You should base your pricing on what similar items sold for on the App. To see what other items sold for on Poshmark, filter the search results by “Availability”

When an item sells, Poshmark will email you a prepaid shipping label. From here, you have two options:

  1. Schedule a home pickup from the US Postal Service website.
  2. Or drive the item to the post office yourself.

Poshmark takes a $2.95 commission on all sales under $15 and a 20% commission on all sales over $15. 

If someone likes the items you sell, they can follow and browse your closet. One of Poshmark’s top sellers, Cynthia Mendoza, told Business Insider that she suggests you create a particular style with your shop.

ThredUp is one of the most popular online consignment shops. Millions of people have downloaded their mobile app and shop here every month meaning there’s a huge opportunity for anybody looking to quickly sell their clothing and accessories.

Getting started with them is quick and simple. 

To start, you can request a “clean out” bag to ship your clothing to them for free. Once ThredUp receives your bag, lists your items, and sells them, you can make up to 80% of the resale value. Since ThredUp is such a trusted marketplace, items sell fast if they decide to list them.

If ThredUp rejects your items, you can donate them to charity or pay $10.99 for the return shipping if you want to keep your items.

After commissions and fees are taken out, your profits may be extremely low. Honestly, you may end up asking yourself, “Is $0.78 of profit worth it over donating this item to a woman or man in need who needs quality clothes to get back on their feet?”

To get paid, ThredUp gives you three options:

  • Credit for shopping on ThredUp
  • PayPal credit (available after 14 days with a 2% fee)
  • Receive a Visa Prepaid card (available;e after 14 days with no fees)

If you have some high-end items that you want to get rid of, Tradesy is probably the place for you. Just like The Real Real, you’ll find designer brands like Gucci, Ferragamo, and Prada.

The only difference between The Real Real and Tradesy is that Tradesy is not an online consignment shop. This means you have to handle shipping items to your customers yourself.

You can list items immediately on their peer-to-peer marketplace. All you have to do is create a new listing, add a description of your products, set the price, and add appealing photos.

Tradesy takes a 19.99% cut from any item you sell and takes about two weeks to release your money after selling. 

This may seem like a high fee, however, Tradesy will handle all of the marketing for you, provide a free shipping & mailing kit, and also help you clean up your product images to give you a better chance of selling your items.

Sold items must be shipped within 10 days of being sold.


eBay is the world’s largest online resale marketplace. At any given moment, there are millions of items for sale ranging from electronics, kitchen appliances, and of course clothing.

Getting started is easy and doesn’t cost you a thing since your first 100 listings are free each month. First, you’ll want to set up a seller account with a linked PayPal account to receive payments. 

eBay sellers are allowed to keep a large portion of their profits. For example, if you sell an item for $50, you’re going to keep $43.25. 

When pricing your items, keep in mind that you must also pay to ship an item and PayPal will knock off an extra 3% from your revenue

Speaking of pricing, you have two options:

  1. Fixed Price: Fixed price selling actually gives you a few more options. If you want to sell your items for a fixed amount with little guesswork, this is the option for you. 
  2. Auction: In an auction sale, the goods go to the highest bidder. Auctions are best for in-demand items or during the holidays. In-demand items often garner a selling price higher than there resale value. This can be a fantastic way to sell items quickly if you just opened a new store. Keep in mind, you will be obliged to give your buyer the item so set the minimum at a price you’re comfortable with.

Facebook Marketplace

Did you know that Facebook has over 2.45 billion users? This makes it a fantastic place to sell your unused clothes.

On Facebook, you have two great options to get rid of your items:

  1. Facebook Marketplace: Their marketplace is a hidden gem of a place where you can sell anything from clothing to your car. It’s similar to Facebook, but because business is done right on Facebook, there’s an added trust factor.
  2. Buy And Sell Groups: Each community will have at least a few buy and sell groups that are 100% free to join and sell items on. 

Since they’re local groups, you probably won’t have to worry about shipping an item. Usually, you can have the person purchasing the item from you pick it up at an agreed-upon location.

The Real Real

To see how much your designer clothing can sell for on The Real Real, just go to their consign page. You can then pick the exact category of clothing/accessories and see how much your items are worth. Of course, the experts at The Real Real will price your items for you.

Brands like Gucci, Supreme, Christian Louboutin, & Balenciaga sell great here.

Again, since they’re handling the majority of the legwork for you, they’re going to take a significant cut. 

Here’s their current commission structure:

  • Sales of less than $1,500 will get a 55 percent commission.
  • Items with an original resale list price below $145 bring in a 40 percent commission. 
  • If your annual sales exceed $10,000, you’ll receive a 70% commission.
  • Items with a resale list price of $2,500 or more receive the largest commission: 85%. 
  • Top consignors receive a 70 percent commission if their annual sales exceed $10,000. Watches with a resale list price of $2,500 or more are entitled to the largest commission on the site: 85 percent.

If you want to keep the majority of your profits, then try selling directly to consumers on Craigslist or eBay. Keep in mind, items that sell best on The Real Real may have a difficult time being sold elsewhere.


Swap is not as heard of as sites like ThredUp and Poshmark, but it’s still a great option for men’s, woman’s, and baby clothes. Unlike a few of the marketplaces listed, Swap has fantastic reviews online. This is an indicator of a fantastic seller support system and buying system. 

Swap has a competitive commission structure and even offers a 20% bonus if you help them sell items like Lululemon, Nike, & Armani. 

To get started, you need to send your clothing to Swap so they can approve of your items and list them. On average, about 50% of your items will be rejected for reasons like quality or demand.

The items they do choose to list will be photographed for you. Just like ThredUp, Swap gives you the option to donate your unlisted items or pay to have them sent back to you.


Mercari is a Japanese marketplace app that allows people to list their clothing and accessories for free. It’s a huge hit in Japan as 30% of their population uses this app. 

Mercari’s getting started process is similar to eBay or Tradesy. You can immediately list your items, upload photos, and set a price.

When your item is listed, buyers can like your item or of course, buy it. They’ll also ask you questions about the item. We’d highly suggest responding to any questions to increase the chances of your items selling. 

Make sure to mark up your prices at least 10% to account for fees, shipping, returns, etc. Just like these websites, you need to make a profit to make this worth your while.

Getting started on Mercari is free, but they charge a 10% flat rate for every item that sells.

ASOS Marketplace

What kind of clothing can you sell on ASOS? Asos stopped selling kids clothes and focuses on just men’s and woman’s clothing. 

Their process is a little different. You have to first request access to sell on their marketplace. After request, you’ll have to prove that you actually own original items and not counterfeit goods. 

Once you’re accepted you can list your items.

What makes ASOS so unique is their standards for photos.

Here are a few do’s and dont’s according to their style guide:

  • Up to five images are allowed
  • Images with mannequins are not allowed unless they are stationery products
  • Black and white images are not allowed
  • Images with models can only show one person and catwalk images are not allowed

These standards turn ASOS into an aesthetic paradise. The “original” Instagram, if you will. 

Another standard is providing your own customer service. Just like Mercari (and just about every site/app on this list), prospective customers can ask questions. Their queries must be answered within one day.

All of this gives ASOS an extremely unique selling and buying experience. To top it off, they don’t call your shops, “stores”, but rather “boutiques”.


What kind of list would this be if we didn’t include Craigslist? Just like Facebook, Craigslist has scores of users and a local element which makes selling and delivering items easy.

If you list an item on an online consignment shop like ThredUp and nobody buys it, instead of giving up, list it on Craigslist.


Refashioner allows people to sell more indy styled clothing. If you have an ultra-unique vintage piece of clothing that somebody might not find at the mall, Macy’s, or Amazon, this is the place to sell it.

One big con is refashioner takes a 22% commission from items. I know, that’s a lot, but they can charge this since many items will probably have trouble selling anywhere else. 

A nice plus is payments are processed and sent to your account in 3 days

Tips For Selling Your Clothes Online

Take Good Photo’s

Just like meeting someone in person, good first impressions are everything. If you’re using a site like Craigslist, eBay, or Facebook Marketplace, make sure you take good photos of your clothes. 

Utilize natural light for and a quality camera so your photos look dynamic and garner an immediate second glance. 

The more high-quality photos you have of an item, the more likely it is to sell. When you capture every angle, a prospective buyer will feel more confident in their decision to buy the item. 

Offer Free Shipping

Free shipping gets the attention of potential buyers. Most of the sites have advanced filters like “Offers Free Shipping” which will put more eyeballs on your items.

When it comes down to two items, people will more likely than not choose the item with free shipping. Just bundle the cost of free shipping into the cost of the item so you get what you want and the buyer does too.

Provide A Detailed & Honest Description

A good seller rating can be the difference between getting rid of an entire wardrobe and hardly selling more than a few items.

Be honest upfront by detailing any possible flaws with the clothing and be as precise as possible with the product description and sizing charts.

All of these sites and apps allow you to add a product description to all of your items. This is your opportunity to fill it up with everything and nothing about your item. Don’t just add facts, but also emotional details about how this specific item may make someone feel.

Account For Shipping And Fees

By the time your $50 jacket is sold, you may only see $15. That’s better than the $0 you’d make by it sitting in your closet, but there is a way to make more money from your items.

The best way to combat this is by simply marking your item up at a higher price. In my mind, the worst thing that can happen is the item doesn’t sell at the current price. If this happens, some sites offer a “clearance” section to help move items faster. If they don’t just mark down the price yourself.

Starting Your Own Online Clothing Business

We gave you countless options of how you can make a pretty penny reselling your clothes on Poshmark, but what if you want to start your own website selling vintage clothing?

The truth is, you can do this same process on any app, or even start your own website and business.

Start Your Online Clothing Business With These Sites


Etsy is one of the biggest online selling platforms and is designed specifically for people selling handmade or vintage items.

The great thing about this platform is it gives you access to over 33 million shoppers worldwide. If you’re a graphic designer with a few vectors or you make cute scarfs or hats, Etsy is the place to sell.

Etsy charges a $0.20 listing fee per item, but you won’t be charged until an item actually sells. Payments can go directly into your PayPal account or bank account through Etsy Payments.


Storenvy allows you to build your own custom storefront in less than five minutes. Their marketplace receives over five million visits a month making it the perfect place to sell if you don’t want to worry about marketing.


Shopify is easily the most robust option if you’re really serious about turning your side gig into a serious hustle. Their platform gives you thousands of customizable themes and lets you create your own site. Thousands of popular brands use Shopify and you probably didn’t know it.

Tips for Selling Clothes Online Successfully

Pick A Niche

It may be tempting to list everything you can get your hands on in your store, but this will confuse people and make you look a bit tacky… For lack of a better word.

The best brands all focus on a particular niche like sports clothing, jewelry, indie clothing, etc. Customers like to connect themselves with something that expresses who they are. The average consumer would also prefer to buy multiple items from the same store instead of having to shop around.

Basically, find your niche and own it.

Write Killer Descriptions

One of my favorite hacks is to go all out on the product descriptions. 

When somebody lands on your site, you’re going to have to do a little bit of extra work to sell them. They’ll want to know if the product is quality? If it’s for them? If they’ll like it? How it looks/fits? Etc. This is your opportunity to sell them.

I like to go the extra mile and take videos of products to add an extra visual element so the product descriptions are truly mouthwatering and stand out from the competition.

Be Responsive And Interactive With Customers

Sometimes customers will want to interact with a real person before investing their money on a product. If they have questions, answer them ASAP. Brands that ignore their potential customers are just warming them up for their competition! This goes for small mom and pop shops and commercial brands.

You can also bet that if one person is asking you a question so be sure to make sure others can see your response or add it to the product description.

Get Awesome Reviews

Think of how many things you buy in months or years time. Out of all the items you enjoyed, how many of them did you leave a review for?

If I had to guess, probably not a lot.

If you own an online store, you know how important reviews are. You also know they’re not easy to get.

My suggestion, always go above and beyond to make sure your customers get what they want.

One of my favorite old-school strategies is to follow up with customers about 5-7 days after sending them their item. I’ll ask them if they liked it, why, and if there’s anything I could have done better.

People appreciate when you take the time to see if they’re happy with their purchase. Because of the law of reciprocity, they may even leave a review after the fact.

Get Creative

One of my closest mentors (who’s now a multi-millionaire) got started selling clothes online way before the eCommerce boom.

I thought I worked hard, until he told me the story of how he used to hustle for cash after college to pay off his loans, rent, and other expenses.

Here’s what he would do:

He’d go to the stores like Ross, Macy’s, and J.C. Penney with massive sales racks and he’d buy just about everything.

Handfuls of JNCO jeans, every graphic tee they had, and buckets of shoes. He’d take his $500 receipt (you’ll soon learn why this was important) and pack up his new wardrobes in his car.

He’d then go on sites like eBay and list these items for a reasonable markup. To your and my surprise, people actually bought these items.

Guess what he’d do with the clothing he couldn’t sell?

You guessed it!

Return them and get a full refund.

Now I’m not 100% sure about the legality of this today and if you should even try this.

Regardless, here’s the point.

He needed money, so we got creative and turned it into a legitimate hustle that’s paved the way for multiple 7-figure businesses.

Final Thoughts

We live in a world where people want things cheap and fast. This makes selling your unused clothing is a great way to add a couple hundred or thousand dollars to your bank account.

Compared to starting a normal side business, the start-up cost is next to nothing.

You also have an added social conscious. Every year, millions if used clothing items are thrown in a landfill. According to recent statistics, only 20% of clothing will ever be reused or recycled. Clothing that sits in landfills ends up sitting there for as long as 200 years all the while emitting greenhouse gases.

If your home is looking like a landfill, consider getting rid of some of your clothing right away.

The extra money you make can go towards your savings, a weekend vacation, or an extra night out per week.
