WANT TO EARN EXTRA MONEY?

Dog sitting is fast becoming a popular way to make money as a new generation of pet lovers are looking for alternative ways to have their pets cared for when they’re away from home.

For most people, the idea of taking care of dogs and getting paid for it is too good to be true, but there are, in fact, a lot of different ways to make this dream into a reality.

In this day and age, you can find ways to do just about anything online, including connecting with pet owners in need of a reliable sitter.

One such site that allows you to do this is Rover.com. This site was created to help pet owners ‘book trusted sitters and dog walkers who’ll treat your pets like family.’

If looking after cute puppies and kitties for cash sounds appealing, stay tuned, as in today’s article, we’ll be taking an in-depth look into Rover and deciding whether the site is worth your time or too good to be true.

What is Rover?

Rover is one of the most popular websites for finding pet owners looking to connect with reliable sitters in their area.

According to its website, Rover is the largest network of pet sitters in the world. As a registered Rover sitter, you can offer a range of pet care services such as dog boarding, pet sitting, and doggy daycare.

Rovers main aim is to make the process of finding a pet sitter who is qualified to care for your pet easier.

All sitters for the company are subject to background and identity checks. They’re also required to take part in on-going sitter education to ensure that they have an understanding of best practices for caring for pets.

At first glance, it seems as though the company might be taking things a little bit too seriously on the compliance front. However, if you’ve ever been a pet sitter before, you’ll probably be glad of these extra layers of security.

This is because a lot of pet owners can be, for want of a better word, ‘high-maintenance’ when it comes to their furry friends.

As a result of their stringent requirements, Rover boasts that they only accept around 20% of the sitter applicants.

To a potential applicant, this figure might seem disheartening, but if you have the necessary skills and you know how to look after animals, then you shouldn’t have too much trouble getting accepted onto the platform.

Still keen to learn more about how to make money caring for pets? Great! Let’s take a look into how the platform actually works and what you can expect working as a sitter for Rover.

How Does It Work?

The Rover website is pretty easy to use and very informational when it comes to explaining how the whole process works.

In essence, all you need to do as a sitter is complete your profile and have it verified, then you will be able to set your own rates on the platform and sit back and wait for the job requests to roll in.

Depending on which type of service you decide to offer, each day working for Rover could be very different. There are four main types of services that sitters can offer:

Dog/Cat Boarding

This is when you offer to take care of a dog or cat overnight, or whilst pet owners are on holiday. As this involves caring for a pet for longer periods of time in your own home, this is the service that will allow you to earn the most as a pet sitter.

Dog Walking

This involves collecting dogs from their homes when their owners are out at work, walking them and returning them safely.

Doggy Day Care

This option allows you to welcome dogs into your home and walk/play with them whilst their owners are at work.

House-sitting, Drop-ins

This involves checking on the pet in their own home and can sometimes involve ensuring that the property is secure.

As a Rover sitter, you can opt to offer one or all of these services at any one time.

Sitters are also free to set their own rates, so if you plan to do dog walking or sitting, you can calculate a price that makes the activity worth your time and effort.

As a dog walker, you may be required to drive and collect dogs in your area for walks, so it’s a good idea to track your mileage and calculate fuel costs into your rates.

Once your profile is up and running and you’ve set your rates and services, you are then free to accept or decline any offers that come in.

Once you’ve completed jobs using the app, you will be paid by Rover themselves and this will be released two days after the job has been completed.

Rover User Support

When caring for other peoples pet’s, it can be easy to worry about all of the things that could potentially go wrong, which is why pet sitting can often be quite stressful.

However, working with a company like Rover might be able to help you alleviate these anxieties.

The company covers all bookings made through the app with their ‘Rover Guarantee‘. The guarantee covers things like veterinary expenses that might be required were something to go wrong whilst caring for a ‘Rover Pet’.

The company also offers ongoing education for sitters which can help them to develop skills to be better animal lovers and pet sitters.

Is Rover.com Legit?

On the surface, Rover seems like the ideal job for a pet lover looking to earn some extra cash, but you might be thinking that it’s all a little bit too good to be true.

And honestly, I don’t blame you, making $1000+ per month looking after cute doggos does sound a little bit too perfect.

Despite this, the word on the street is that Rover is completely legitimate and treats their sitters pretty well.

There are some complaints from sitters about how much Rover take from your earnings. For using the Rover app or website to connect with clients, the company deducts 15% of any earnings.

This doesn’t include tips, which the company actively encourages pet owners to supply in cash, instead of through the website.

However, the job doesn’t come with any benefits, and sitters are required to pay their own tax out of the earnings which are left after the Rover fees.

Some sitters feel that working for the app isn’t exactly worth the money, especially if you plan you plan to do it on a full-time basis.

According to a quote from the head of operations at Rover, ‘the majority of sitters treat this as a part-time role’ meaning that the jobs may be better suited to someone looking for an interesting side hustle, as opposed to a full-time income.

Which leads us nicely into our next section, and the answer to the question you’ve all been waiting for…

How Much Can You Actually Earn on Rover?

Well, according to Rover’s official website, sitters can earn up to $1000/Month. Rover representatives have also stated that some petsitters who offer high-value quality service on a full-time basis can also a lot more than this.

In reality, though, if you’re treating the job as a side hustle, you’re likely to earn a lot less than this, and can probably expect to earn $200-$300 a month depending on your availability and services.

How much you actually earn through the site will depend on a number of different factors such as:

Where You Live

Rover is an extremely popular app, but if you live in a small town and you’re not within commuting distance to a big city, then you may find that not very many pet owners in your area are using the app.

It’s more likely that you’ll be able to make real money if you live in an area that has a lot of professionals and young families who own pets but still have a busy working schedule to keep up with.

What Type of Services You Offer

With Rover, you’re free to set your own rates for your services. However, pet owners will be willing to pay you a lot more for some services than they do others.

For example, dog boarding is the most well-paid service as the responsibilities are much higher. If you had a full dog boarding schedule, you’re likely to earn a lot more than if you did the same amount of hours walking of dropping in on pets.

How Many Pets You Care For at One Time

As long as it’s ok with the pet owners, you’re free to care for a few different pets at a time. For example, if you’re willing, you can offer doggy boarding for 2-3 dogs at a time, which means you can triple your nightly boarding fee.

However, some pet owners don’t like this, as their dogs might be fearful of other dogs, or antisocial, so be sure to make the owners aware of this before accepting the booking.

How to Increase Your Earnings on Rover

If you do decide to do Rover on a part-time basis, there are a few things you can do to maximize your full earning potential when working on the app. These include

Offering a Variety of Services

The more different types of services you offer, the more likely it is that your available time will be filled with bookings. If you have a particular service that you prefer, then prioritize it, but if you don’t really mind then offer all services and see which one is the most popular

Do a Great Job (and Get Tips!)

Rover doesn’t have a tipping facility as part of its app or website, but pet owners are at liberty to tip you in cash if they choose to.

You can increase your chances of getting a good tip by ensuring that the dogs and cats you’re taking care of are well looked after and happy.

It’s a really good idea to take pictures of the pets that you can show to the owner. This can help the owner to feel more at ease leaving their fur babies alone with a stranger, and can also help to prove to them that you’re taking the jobs seriously and caring for their pets properly.

Get a 5* Rating

This kind of ties in with the last point, however, it’s important to ensure that all owners are taking the time to give you a good rating and not just tipping.

To be really successful on the platform, it’s ideal if you can secure a 5-star rating, but this isn’t always easy. If you want to secure a good rating try to make sure that you’re honest about your home and services on your profile, to prevent any surprises when the owners come to visit.

You should also try to avoid any accidents and be vigilant when the pets are around. If you do encounter any problems when taking care of the pets, act fast, talk to the owner and try your best to resolve the situation in a professional manner so that they don’t leave you a bad rating.

How To Sign Up to Rover

So you know how Rover works, how much it pays, and how to be the best dog sitter in town. Seem like you’re about ready to get started on your petsitting adventure, so you’re probably wondering, how do you sign up to Rover.

Well, the answer to that question is pretty easy. Simply go to their website, and follow the sign-up link. There will be a number of steps involved in the process such as:

Create an Account

First, you will be asked to create an account using either your Facebook page or Email address. You’ll be asked to input personal information such as your name and zip code. They’ll also ask you to create a password which you’ll use to log into your Rover account in the future.

Complete Your Profile

After this, you’ll be directed to a page where you can input all the information about yourself that you’ll be sharing with potential clients. This includes things like pictures, rates and services, and location information.

Background Check and Acceptance

Once your profile is complete, you’ll then send it off to be approved by the Rover team. You may also be asked to complete a background or identity check. Rover uses this to ensure the safety of all the pets that are cared for through the platform.

Start Working

Once you’ve completed the profile and all required checks, you’re ready to start working. You can simply accept any suitable jobs that come your way and start working on building your rating.

Rover Reviews

Now you basically know everything there is to know about being a Rover pet sitter. However, it’s always a good idea to take a look at what other people who have worked for the company have to say.

On the whole, the Glassdoor reviews for the company are pretty good, and previous workers scored it a 4.3 overall. Some of their main complaints include:

  • High job competition
  • App issues and limitations
  • Fee deductions

Despite the few negatives that cropped up, most reviewers regarded Rover as a ‘decent part time job’ that is a perfect fit if you have some free time and you love dogs.

Rover has also received its fair share of reviews from customers, which on the whole are surprisingly negative. A lot of customers complain about Rovers customer service and the professionalism of walkers and boarders using the app.

However, the way I see it, this leaves a lot of room for great walkers and sitter to stand out from the crowd and make the most of what the app has to offer.

Alternatives to Rover

Rover is only one of many similar sites that can help you to connect with pet owners looking for pet sitting services. If you’re keen to turn pet sitting into a career and want to get your finger into as many pies as possible, some other sites to look into include:

Wag! App

Wag! App is an app based dog walking service that works in a similar way to ride-sharing services like Uber.

You can use the app to pick up on demand bookings for dog walking in your local area. If you’re looking for a fun and flexible pastime that could earn you a little cash as well, Wag! is a great option.

If you’re keen to learn more about it, we’ve written a [full review of Wag! App] just like this one.

Dog Vacay

Dog Vacay is another great site ideal for pet sitters who are looking to offer boarding service. You can use the site to connect with pet owners who are looking for short term or long term pet boarding whilst they go on vacation

Unlike Rover, Dog Vacay focuses specifically on boarding, so it could be a great choice if you’re not interested in walking or dropping-in on pets.

TrustedHousesitters

TrustedHousesitters differs slightly from all of the apps mentioned above. It’s primarily a house sitting website where people can connect with homeowners looking for someone to stay at their home whilst they’re away.

However, most of the jobs listed on TrustedHousesitters are actually pet sitting gigs.

Jobs on TrustedHousesitters aren’t paid, but you do get to take advantage of free accommodation. This is great if you’re a pet lover looking for ways to save money while traveling.

Final Thoughts

That concludes our full review of Rover. We hope that you feel more in the know about what the website has to offer.

In my personal opinion, Rover offers a great opportunity to make money while doing something fun and fulfilling and is a great choice for all pet lovers, whether you’re a dog or a cat person.
