Springtime is only a few months away, and with that comes spring cleaning. Some people dread this chore, but I actually love it. It’s a great time of year to make some extra cash.
You may be surprised to learn how many unique ways you can make money from spring cleaning. I’ve highlighted ten examples below that are easy and effective. Before you toss old products out, give these money making options a try.
1. Use Old Tablets And Phones For Money Making Apps
If you don’t have any luck selling old phones or tablets, you have another option. As long as they can connect to WiFi, you can use them to make money.
These are just three options among dozens of great opportunities. And if you have a tablet, you can easily use survey sites. Fortunately, you don’t have to go digging for the best paid apps and sites. We’ve done the work for you. Check out these Frugal For Less Posts:

2. Get Cash For Your Unused Gift Cards
It’s pretty common to receive gift cards over the winter holidays. If you have some you aren’t interested in, don’t toss them out! You can instantly sell gift cards online or swap them for different ones. You may be surprised how great of a deal you can get.
I listed lots of different examples in my post 8 Websites To Make Money Selling Gift Cards Online. Raise will pay you more than $45 for a $50 Wal-Mart gift card. Here’s a few of our favorite sites:
If you traded it in for an Amazon gift card, you’d get about $48. This is such an easy way to get 100% free cash. The sites in my post pay via PayPal, check, direct deposit, and more.
3. Sell Clothes Through Online Consignment Stores
Online consignment stores are a great low-effort way to sell your clothes. In my experience, it’s more convenient than driving from shop to shop trying to make a sale.
Why waste fuel and time when you don’t have to? You can sell used clothing, jewelry, purses, shoes, and other types of apparel. Below you’ll find three popular places to sell clothes online.
thredUP is well-known for being the largest online thrift store. They feature gently used items for sale, and they make the process easy for sellers. This store is a bit picky, so they’re best for selling your best clothes and accessories. If they like what you offer, you’ll get paid via PayPal.
Poshmark is another great option for making extra cash. You can download their iPhone or Android app, which is impressively easy to use. You’re walked through the selling process, and their FAQ section is super helpful.
When you make a sale, you’ll get paid through direct deposit or a check in the mail.
Tradesy is for fashionistas who are all about name brands. If you’re into finer apparel, try selling your luxury clothes on Tradesy. The listing process is easy, and the company even edits your photos to enhance them.
If your items sell, you will get paid through PayPal, debit card deposit, or bank account deposit.

4. Sell Used Electronics To These 10 Sites
What do you do when you upgrade to a new phone? It’s pretty common to toss your old one into a drawer and forget about it. The same goes for other used electronics. But there’s no need to do this when you can get cash for them.
Selling electronics online is surprisingly easy, and you have dozens of buyback sites to choose from.
For a comprehensive list, check out my post 10 Places To Sell Used Cell Phones Online. You’ll find a lot of detail about each buyback site, how much you can make, and more. Your phone or electronic doesn’t have to be in great condition.
In many cases, you can get some cash for fairly used items. With multiple buyers, there’s always someone looking for what you’re selling.
5. Sell Used Textbooks Online
If you’re a college student, you know that textbooks are a huge investment. It’s common for students to spend several hundred dollars per year on books.
So when you’re done with them, selling them is very ideal. Campus bookstores aren’t known for offering great prices for used textbooks. Fortunately, there are some awesome online outlets and resources.
BookFinder is my top pick for selling used textbooks online. They show you buying offers from multiple online outlets. You pick the buyback price that you want, and BookFinder helps you make the sale.
They’re transparent about shipping costs and don’t add in hidden fees. This should be your first stop if you want the best possible profit.
Cash4Books has a great reputation, and they make selling textbooks a breeze. Simply type in the ISBN from each book you want to sell, and you’ll get a quote.
They offer free shipping and pay via PayPal, which makes things even easier. You can even download their smartphone app to scan the barcode on your books. This will give you instant buyback quotes.
eCampus is another easy option for selling your textbooks. You’ll get a price quote for your books, and you ship them to eCampus for free. You can get paid through direct deposit or credit.
Optionally, you can choose in-store credit if you need to buy different textbooks. Like the other two resources, there aren’t any hidden fees.
6. Explore Local Buy And Sell Websites
The main downside to selling online is commission charges and shipping costs. Fortunately, free and local ways to sell are very popular. There are tons of buy and sell websites that are location-based.
Many of them don’t have listing fees. The sites that do usually have smaller fees than larger consignment shop sites.
You also get the advantage of selling without shipping. You can meet buyers in a safe and public location. Sell your used items, and walk away with cash in your hand.
There’s no need to worry about PayPal transfers or waiting for a check in the mail. Here are some popular options that have good reputations.
Facebook Marketplace and Craigslist are my two personal favorites. They’re 100% free and easy to use. It only takes a few minutes to create ads with photos.
I routinely use Craigslist when I spring clean, and I’ve made anywhere between $15 and $100. And it’s always in cash – not a bad deal at all.

7. Offer To Help Others With Spring Cleaning
If you don’t have any items to sell, that doesn’t mean you can’t earn some extra money. There are many ways you can offer to help others with their spring cleaning. Getting paid a small fee for the help you provide is reasonable, and it never hurts to ask. Here are a few examples:
- Offer to help organize items
- Offer to help run a garage sale
- Offer to babysit children while parents are spring cleaning
- Offer to drive items to donation centers
You can reach out to friends and family; just be clear that you’re offering help for pay. You may also want to post in your neighborhood’s Facebook group, if applicable.
There’s a good chance you’ll find some gigs to make quick cash. Posting an ad on Care.com is another good option.
You can even use Craigslist to offer these services for spring cleaning. It’s a simple way to expand your local options. Just make sure to do so with caution.
Craigslist offers some great safety tips, so check those out before posting an ad.
8. Find Local Children’s Resale Events
One of the easiest ways I’ve earned spring cleaning money is by selling used children’s clothing. Unfortunately, I got next to nothing when I sold them at consignment shops.
A family member told me about a local children’s resale event. This is essentially a huge indoor community garage sale. Members of your city or county can join in and profit from sales. These sales are run by:
- PTA groups
- Parenting groups on Facebook
Start by looking at your school district’s website or your city’s community calendar. If you’re in any Facebook parenting groups, make sure to ask about these events. They’re commonly held in the spring, but I’ve seen several events in my area throughout the year.
9. List And Wait On These Websites
If you’re not in a hurry to sell, you may consider listing your used items on eBay and Amazon. I suggest exploring the options above first, but this is a good last resort. It’s especially helpful if you have older items that aren’t hot sellers elsewhere.
For example, I had a very outdated iPod that I never used. I had no luck with local listings or other websites. I decided to sell it on eBay. Within a week or so, it sold to a bidder for about $15. The listing fees are pretty low, so this was a decent profit for me. Otherwise, the iPod would have continued collecting dust in a junk drawer.
If you sell on Amazon, you can make a pretty good amount of money. You’ll likely need to stick to higher-quality items though. eBay is much laxer, and you can sell almost anything.
I’ve sold used cameras on Amazon. Again, they take a fee but it’s not too high. This route took about 3-4 weeks for me. But it was an easy option since I had a hard time selling the camera locally.
10. Donate Items And Get Tax Deductions
Donating used items is a popular option for many reasons. It’s easy, free, and an excellent way to help people in need. Donating doesn’t earn you money directly, but you may get a larger tax return.
All you’ve got to do is keep your receipts from any donations that you make. You’ll itemize your deductions on your taxes. This can decrease the amount of eligible income you’ll be taxed for.
I know this sounds confusing if you’re not familiar with the process. Before I started freelancing, I knew nothing about itemized deductions. Tips to Get the Best Tax Deduction on Donated Items is a great post if you need some guidance. It explains the process in simple terms, and you’ll get some great tips as well.
Again, this won’t put cash in your pocket this spring. But there’s a good chance it’ll boost your tax refund for next year. If you plan on donating used items, why not give it a shot?
As you can see, spring cleaning isn’t such a bad thing after all. It’s a great way to free up some space and earn money at the same time. Try using a mix of the 10 ideas in this post to maximize your sales. You may be surprised to discover just how much cash you can make this season.
