1. VIPKID

VIPKID is a web-based education platform for English tutors and Chinese students. The company employs over 20,000 English tutors on a freelance basis. VIPKID has many reputable reviews and financial backers – there’s no doubt they’re a legitimate company.

As a tutor, you work with students ages 4 to 12 in one-on-one sessions. You don’t need to speak Chinese to apply for this position. However, you do need to meet some educational and experience requirements.

Approved applicants go through a video interview and then hold a mock tutoring session. After this is done, you can start working as an English tutor.

Pay Per Hour

VIPKID guarantees tutors are paid $14 to $18 per hour or more. Your initial hourly pay is partially based on your mock tutoring session performance.

There are bonuses available that increase hourly pay, and they’re based on participation and performance. You can earn up to $22 per hour.

Part-Time Or Full-Time

VIPKID does not limit the hours you can work, but most VIPKID tutors work part-time. The peak hours for tutors to work are very early in the morning. This matches up with the peak hours that students log on for tutoring sessions.

Many third-party reviews report working 3 to 5 hours per day on weekday mornings. They also report earnings of $2,000 per month on average.

Main Qualifications

VIPKID requires applicants to meet certain criteria. To get hired as a tutor, you need to:

  • Have a Bachelor’s degree in any field.
  • Have formal or informal teaching experience – anything from casual tutoring to being a former teacher.
  • Have eligibility to work in the United States or Canada.

Part-Time Or Full-Time

You do not have to meet any minimum hourly requirements, and this is typically considered a part-time position. Most third-party reviews about Chegg report that tutors work very part-time.

The company says the top 5% of tutors earn $1,000 per month. Based on a rate of $20 per hour, that means they work 12.5 hours per week.

Chegg Tutors has pretty simple qualifications that you’ll need to meet. To apply for this hourly job, you will need to:

  • Have a degree from a four-year university or currently be enrolled in a four-year university program.
